I'm actually pretty excited that Amanda is heading there for grad school. Hopefully I'll be able to get to a couple games and see BG when they are there!

I see they implied the stunning architecture of the Glass Bowel with their double-wide inspired press box

But looking closer, the whole thing looks like a rip-off of the GB!

I agree, it does kinda resemble the Glass Bowl, which I always thought was one of the uglier stadiums in college football. Not just because Toledo plays there, but the overall layout. The huge press box on a smaller stadium just looks out of place, and makes the overall picture very unattractive.

I disagree about the GB comparisons, and I think the facility will stand out in comparison to the cold steel confines of GB when its all said and done. Its hard to judge that stadium when its not complete.

Similarities:

1 - Tall press box
2 - Squared end with athletic complex
3 - Rounded end with grass hill for seating

But yeah, the scoreboard is in the other end

I don't see light poles in the middle of the stands.

I don't see crappy field turf look alike product down on the surface.

There is no gray stone down.

It isn't a bowl.

Because there is a grass embankment does that make it like UVA?

With the athletic facility in the endzone does it make it like Louisville? BG? Western Michigan?

There are only so many ways to design a stadium, and the fact of the matter is, Akron just jumped to the top of the short list of best stadiums in the MAC. Toledo and anyone else can go on whining and crying, but the facts are what the facts are, and Akron has built a stadium the most of us would die to have.

As great as the Doyt is.. its hard to get in and out of, with the ramps, concessions are mediocre, and site lines are often blocked by the person three rows in front of you when they stand up.

Who's paying for this? Is it stimulus money? The state keeps cutting program after program at universities, but finds money for stadia and arenas. Are they forcing their students to pay for it?

I'd be willing to bet InfoCision is paying for quite a bit of it. According to Wikiedia, the project will be 61.6 million dollars. Not sure who all is fronting the bill on that, but two things to gather - construction materials are cheap right now, and a project of this size will create a lot of jobs in NE Ohio from this past December until at least September.

No silly. They called alumni and asked them to donate money to one of two causes, and they could choose between academics or a new stadium. You see which is getting built.

Was someone from Toledo whining? Actually Tom brought it up on the UT board. There are distinct similarities on the press box side, intentionally or otherwise. No whining, just observations. I doubt you'll find many people outside of Kent that will argue that Akron will have the best stadium in the league.

There are obvious similarities, but it is far from a carbon copy. I would ask the UT types though, if it was ever intended to do more with the north side of the stadium. The athletics center there always struck me as a rather blan wall, and was curious if some long-term plans called for another deck of seats, or something that was the reason for few windows and such.
