This anti trust thing is a BS joke to secure votes in the next election but if any of this comes to fruition I agree with what this guy says.

Do you agree?

IMO Congress shouldn't be worried about something so trivial

I don't really see this going anywhere, and even if it didn't, I don't think anything would come of it as far as any kind of change. I can't say I disagree with the concept though. The current system does lead to some worthy schools getting pushed out solely because they are somehow second-class citizens in the college football world.

If there were to be a fix for the problem, I don't know what it would be, nor do I have any suggestions, but I definitely think there is a bit of a problem.

Still, I don't see any change coming.

Oh yeah. I forgot to put that in to begin with. I do agree that it's not something the government really needs to be dealing with right now.

In summary, my position is the following:

Is there a problem? Yes
Do I have any suggestions for a solution? No
Do I think any change will come of this push? No
Do I think the government should be concerning themselves with more important matters? Hell yes.

The government has to work on all problems. Its not like the economy goes bad so they must ignore everything else. The only thing this can do is lend legitimacy to the idea that the BCS is bad.

Here is what the senator wrote.

Citing the money generated by the BCS, Hatch wrote, "If the government were to ignore a similar business arrangement of this magnitude in any other industry, it would be condemned for shirking its responsibility."

That sounds pretty realistic to me.

Overall the reality is there is a law suit there. Boise State's bowl purse was $750,000 last year. Va Tech or whoever the ACC person was was $17million. The ACC team had an automatic bid so they went over the Boise State team that was ranked higher in both polls and the BCS rankings. What will likely end up happening is that the non BCS schools will push this and lose there 1 BCS spot as ALL automatic BCS bids disappear.

The College football coaches poll is also absurd because it helps to determine how much certain teams get from the BCS money. Indiana might think that Auburn is better than Michigan but will vote Michigan because if Michigan gets in they share the money.

There are holes throughout the system.

Yes I absolutely still believe in it. What exactly were you looking for him to do in the first few months? He did not cause this mess, I don't see how he can get blamed for cleaning it up not perfectly.

Do you still work out at Jesse Owens South?

Hahaha. Way to stick to the topic, Tek. Makes your side of the argument look pretty weak. Speaking of a joke.

Well, that's what Tek does. If he can't hang with the actual argument, he turns to personal attacks.

The Mountain West signed the BCS agreement today, so it would appear this push has been set aside yet again.

So you think this is a problem that our taxes should be paying for? This is only a problem to the college football fan. This is not a problem that threatens American's well being. This is not a problem that threatens our national security. This is not a problem that is causing global economic meltdowns. This is not a problem that keeps us in war. This is not a problem that causes gas prices to rise. This is not a problem that started a housing crisis.

Quite frankly it is a problem that is not that god damned important. It is certainly not so damn important that political morons need to be involved.

What is this going to prove?

They can not legislatively force the BCS to move to a playoff system. All they can do is try to break it up by ruling it a monopoly.

The BCS will need the agreement of the university presidents to move to a playoff. without the BCS. They have rejected this idea many times. Most notably Big Ten and Pac 10 presidents. It has no chance without them.

The BCS officials have voted this down just as recently as this off season.

The only thing that would be accomplished (IF anything were to actually happen) is that the BCS would go away and we would go back to the original bowl system.

Tell me...how well did BOISE and Utah fare in THAT f'd up deal before? The best bowl they would get is the Emerald Bowl or something stupid like that.

They would go from the potential of making millions when they do bust into the BCS to making a few thousand dollars. Sounds like a step in the right direction doesn't it?

The BCS has gotten it right several times. This is all stemming from politicians looking for votes from a few angry college football fans whose priorities are obviously F'd up. It is not like we have 3 teams to argue about every year.

If we go back to the original bowl system though, there will be 4 or 5 teams to argue about EVERY year. Remember those days?

That sounds like the same kind of change Obama wouldwant you to believe in. You know.. That dirty BS kind of change that makes things worse than it does better.

If you want a playoff just shut the F up and it will eventually happen. They were just a few votes shy of going to a plus one system in this years vote. This is according to a BCS rep that was interviewed on 97.1 the Fan earlier this summer. That is how it will have to start. Let it happen instead of breaking up the BCS.

Without the BCS, a playoff will never happen.

I would guess that an organization that rewards millions of dollars to state universities should be of interest to all states because all states have the potential to earn that investment. What would a BCS payout mean to a team like BG?

I would imagine that all states would rather have a stronger economy and blanced budgets without making further budget cuts rather than a school making a few million from the BCS.

I don't believe any of these ass clowns ran on a campaign promise to fight the BCS (I know, campaign promises are worthless...ask Obama about broken promises).

Besides, all of these conferences are already making some money off of the BCS without even playing in it. The MAC even gets a slice of the BCS money pie without even competing. Do you REALLY want to take that step backwards and fight the BCS?

From the 08/09 BCS media guide:

FOR 2009 BCS GAMES
Teams and conferences participating in Bowl Championship Series
games receive revenue primarily from two sources – television and
the host bowls.

A total of approximately $1.8 million will be paid to Football
Championship Subdivision (formerly NCAA Division I-AA)
conferences to support the overall health of college football. Over
the fi rst 10 years of the BCS arrangement, more than $100 million
has been paid to Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West,
Sun Belt, and Western Athletic Conferences and to the Football
Championship Subdivision conferences
.

Also, independent institutions Army and Navy will each receive
$100,000 for making their teams available to play in BCS games if
selected.

Nine percent of the net revenues from the arrangement, which is
approximately $9.5 million, is guaranteed in aggregate to Conference
USA, the Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt, and Western
Athletic Conferences for their participation in the arrangement.
When a team from Conference USA, the Mid-American, Mountain
West, Sun Belt, or Western Athletic Conferences plays in a BCS
bowl game, those conferences will receive an additional nine percent
of net revenues
. When more than one team from Conference USA,
the Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt or Western Athletic
Conferences play in the BCS bowl games, those conferences will
receive an additional $4.5 million for each additional team.

Notre Dame is guaranteed 1/66th of the net revenues after
expenses, or approximately $1.3 million. Notre Dame will receive
$4.5 million when its team is a participant.

The share to each conference with an annual automatic berth
in the BCS (ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC) is
approximiately $18 million. When a second team from one of those
conferences qualifi es to play in one of the games, that conference will
receive an additional $4.5 million.

So the NCAA-1AA even gets money from the BCS.

BG makes a couple hundred thousand a year off of the BCS and the MAC never even plays a BCS game. Hell you don't even have to make a bowl game and you get paid just as much as you would for going to the GMAC bowl.

pretty good F'n deal for you I would say so quit bitching. It isn't all that unfair now is it?

This is all a waste of time for the government and a waste of our money.

They could easily quit the BCS and go back to the old system and BG would get nothing when they don't make a bowl game.
