Greeting from Bemidji, MN

Post by Rightupinthere »

My wife has family who live right on Lake Andrusia so we've made another pilgrimage to the Mississippi River headwaters area for some R&R.

This town is hockey nuts right now. I'm going to score myself a keepsake or two from my second favorite college hockey team. I'll give you more of a report about the new arena and more of what the recent hockey success means to the area and versa-visa.

Sounds cool...I had to look this place up on the map just to make sure where it was. Man, you are up there! Have a good time.

Starbucks blows but Dunn Bros Coffee is the absolute best. They have an industrial coffee roaster in the middle of the store. I purchased a pound of whole bean for camp and it was still warm. LOVE IT!

Spent most of the day on the lake yesterday. I saw one of the proposed new spots for the new convention center and hockey arena. It's right on Lake Bemidji, but it's further south than I thought it would be. It's also well off campus. It should be okay since the students will just be able to drive across the lake to a game [yes, you read that correctly.]

More the come. I'm wearing a BG sweatshirt into town and thus far, no commets.

I was in Apple Valley, MN (Twin Cities 'burb), last week and wore a "BG Hockey" T-shirt one day. In Home Depot a guy asked, "That wouldn't be Bowling Green hockey, would it?" He graduated in '81. I didn't have the wits to say our Falcons would be in town over New Year's. (Bemidji was a D-II (or was it D=III?) program when I first visited.)

Welp, I attempted to get a tshirt of the frozen four trip or a sweatshirt for BSU Hockey. I went to the student union where they had sweatshirts for BSU Rugby, Football, and Basketball.

I walked up to the two managers working. "So, let me get this straight. Frozen four run plus recently being accepted into the WCHA and you have NOTHING which states Beaver Hockey?"

"We ran out of everything in April and we ran out of our restock. We'll have more next month."

Work is beginning on the new hockey arena which should be done by next year. It looks nice, but the placement is rather awkward in relation to the campus and the town, IMHO. Still, this town is hockey nuts right now and there is a popular thought that hockey is a tide which will make all boats rise. Going up a division in the other sports plus an increase in enrollment is the talk of townies and alumni.

Tis an exciting time for BSU and all it took is some recent success in hockey. Hopefully, BGSU can find a way to imitate the effort in hockey [but I have my fears.]

If you've got your mind set on a Bemidji hockey shirt and you're not adamant that it come from the campus, you could get one through the USCHO store. The WCHA has a store on its site as well, but it might be a bit early to snatch some Beaver gear.

As for the town, I really like it there. We used to vacation there every summer. Good memories.
