Greastest Victory For BGSU Football

Focusing on the modern era (sorry Doyt), I would have to pick the 2001 win over Northwestern. A bowl game win against a Big 10 team. No other MAC program has such a victory on such a large stage. The pitch/catch between Josh and Cole for the clinching TD was a NFL caliber play. You can see why both received interest from the pros on that play alone. It also highlights the 'what if' Urban had stayed longer even though we will enjoy his association with the program for many years to come (just think, we will be listed in every Florida football program going to the masses).

That bowl game victory was 2003 under Brandon.

The 2001 game people are speaking of is the NW game that we played @ NW to make up for losing the South Carolina game due to 9/11.

Both were great wins.

I think I would have to go with the first victory over Purdue, back in the early 70's.
Now only was it an exciting game, but hey were many peoples pick to win the Big 10 that year, with 5-6 future NFL stars on that team, including Gary Danielson, Darell Stingley, Otis Armstrong, Dave Butz and more.

You beat me to this one...here I thought I might've been the ONLY member of this motley crew to have actually been at that game, (much less alive at the time)... but there was an even BIGGER game (IMO) in BG's history... and I was there too.
The Purdue thing was obviously big because of : 1st B-10 team beaten.....but the 1959 DELAWARE game, between the #1 Blue Hens and the #2 Falcons, to me, at least topped them all.... Yeah, I know, it was the "college div." natl. title on the line, even though we still had to beat OU the next week... But Bernie Casey and Co. probably never looked better in totally domineering the eastern power.

I was at the first BG-Purdue game as well. It was an amazing win. I always remembered that Purdue had held Paul Miles in check for the entire game. Then, when they needed a stop to get the ball back late in the 4th quarter, Miles got outside and picked up something like 20 yards and a clinching first down.
I also remember seeing Dave Butz talking with Bruce Sutter (I think that was our starting center's name) after the game. Sutter looked like a Pop Warner player next to Butz (I think Sutter was maybe 5-11. Butz was a monster; in the 6-6 to 6-8 range.)
Regarding the 59 national championship team. The alumni magazine I got this week had a story about the team and included a team picture. I wish they would have included the names of all the players with the photo. Seems like they deserved it.
Apparently, there's going to be a special celebration marking the 50 anniversary of the national championship this year.

yes, thanks for the date clarification, my mistake. Regarding Brandon, I did realize he was HC but my thought is the win was actually Urban's since the much of the coaching staff and players simply kept his program on auto pilot much like the Jimmy Johnson departure in Dallas when Barry Switzer 'coached' his way to the SB.

Oh, I'll agree with you there. Brandon's teams never again had the fire of that '03 team. That wasn't coincidence.

It's a great write-up of that football team and the '84 hockey team. BGSU Magazine is really coming along very nicely the past few years.

Meanwhile, I know I've got the team photo with the caption, I'll try to dig it up or re-scan it (it's in the media guide, I know). That team accomplished some awesome things on the field for BG.

If you guys REALLY want to see the names etc. of the '59 team...I'll bring in my yearbook for you to look at... I didn't mention this before, but I recall seeing OSU play that year, and I think the Falcons would've given them all they could handle too.

Was it 1992.. I believe that was the year... when BG would have pulled off a greater upset over OSU then App State over Michigan had BG had two breaks go their way.

I still have my ticket, t-shirt, and a few other pieces of memorabilia from that game.

Yeah, it was '92. BG lost 17-6 but played with 'em the whole way.

I was at that game. Herbie was the osu QB (we just about broke him with the hits he took). I was never a big Blackney fan, but his D plan was awesome. You could hear a pin drop in that dumpy stadium of theirs (before the renovation).

and I also love the kid kicking at the end, classic. Man that was such a great and exciting game to be at
