LOL! I eat frosted flakes, not the regular stuff. I've been watching this stuff happen since my arrival at BG in 1995. Eventually all the little things start to add up.

Regardless, it's a good idea to check for urine in your chosen breakfast cereal.
As for the stadium, I've known it as "The Doyt" since I was in school, it's not just a dreamed up marketing idea. Now "Sweet Caroline".... *that* deserves the full attention of our rage.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
I've never had a problem with calling it "The Doyt." To me, that is a very unique name, there aren't a lot of people named Doyt and it just screams BGSU to me. If I'm going to refer to the stadium, I'll generally either say "Doyt L Perry Stadium" or "The Doyt." It's when people say "Perry Stadium" that I feel like it's less unique. Perry isn't that uncommon of a name and so Perry Stadium sounds like it could be anywhere. But it's when you throw his first name, Doyt, in there that it makes it uniquely BG.
As for some of the other things you mentioned, the old bird mascots looked kinda second rate to me. I don't think we changed to a cartoonish mascot just to be like everybody else, but simply to upgrade the costumes a little. And the Starbucks in the union? They tried to use vendors and have a unique coffee shop, but it didn't do to well. When they brought in Starbucks, the name recognition carried and it's been pretty successful.

I love that our stadium is referred to as the Doyt. I think it's an awesome nickname, and I'll always call it that.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
I, quite honestly, LOVE that some call it "The Doyt." If "The Shoe" is an OSU thing, and "The Big House" is a Michigan thing, why can't "The Doyt" be a BGSU thing?
I find it hard to believe that the man is rolling over in his grave at the "disrespect" that some say we show him by shortening the name of the stadium. I rather like to think that he is proud to be the center of something that provides a sense of family for the people of the BGSU community, and moreso than anything, I think THAT exemplifies what Doyt Perry was all about. I mean, after winning. You know.
And really, the old falcon costumes needed an update, and they have helped brand BGSU as a top-rate institution. People see those birds and immediately associate them with a university that stands up and competes in ALL aspects of campus life.
The old coffee shop in the union, as someone who used to work there, was NOT MAKING MONEY. Granted, dining services is not necessarily a money-making venture; but for a department that often ran on a deficit while I was a student, the U made the right choice in bringing in Starbucks. I (while I quickly found that scheduling enough people to work there was a challenge - like we could EVER keep up with that volume) supported any decision that helped bring in more money for the department and thus the school., all while providing me some job security.
Change isn't always a bad thing, unless people are so set in their ways that they choose to hold the university back.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
"The Doyt" sounds retarded, and it always has. It is second only to the stupid screech sound they've used in the order of "me too" junk tossed into the mix. It is however above the pathetic "Sweet Caroline" farce, and the sad attempt they made of passing out "student guides" to brainwash people into trying some of the dumb crowd stunts.
It gets trendy to nick-name ancient venues this or that on the radio and in marketing circles, so naturally the radio types and marketing kids have to jump onboard. So now Doyt L. Perry Stadium is "da doyt." It is a effort to latch some kind of faux marketing cachet onto Perry Stadium, and I think it is half embarrassing. Only more so is that some folks have grabbed onto it the way they have.
That is my view, I offer it as nothing more than that. So take it and leave it as such.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
I don't know - I just think you're way off base, NWLB. No marketing person told me that's what it's called. Every single friend I had when I came on campus as a freshman that went to games called it the Doyt. That's just what it was to everybody I knew. I wasn't brainwashed by any nefarious University officials.

Didn't say you had to agree, and I'm not concerned with people doing so. I said I offered it as my view, there it is.
I never, ever, ever heard the term until a few years ago when the radio-heads started using it. I'm sure somebody had used the term before that.

My dad called it "The Doyt" and he's been dead since 2001... I know he called it that when I was still in HS, and I graduated in 1988.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
It has been called The Doyt for a very long time. That fact never bothered me and it never will. As far as the university latching on to the nick name and exploiting it, more power to them. I'm just thrilled to see some genuine marketing going on....now if we could just get them to pay more attention to hockey.ZiggyZoomba wrote:My dad called it "The Doyt" and he's been dead since 2001... Fine, whatever, I don't really care how long or otherwise, like I said, I, me, myself, think it sounds retarded.
Marketing cachet aside, all that really matters to me, is that I wish they had found some other name to use. Again, for no other reason than "the doyt," sounds dumb. Nice to know we've had a dumb sounding nick-name in use for over 20 years.

Re: Doyt Perry Graphic on Stadium
As my old blog post indicates I am not head over heels excited about calling the stadium The Doyt, but often times I do call it that. The point I made in that old blog post was a reaction to the first WELCOME TO THE DOYT signage that went were our old M.A.C. Champions were listed. I felt that it could lead to "forgetting" the man and using the cute moniker. ( here is a link to that post: http://blog.bgsusports.com/?p=46" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
The fact that this graphic has gone up with a massive picture of the man though seems ok with me. This would cause young children, fans of the opposition and incoming freshman to ponder "who is that guy?" and find a little piece of BG history.
In a sense this graphic is playing to both crowds- it is branding the stadium The Doyt in a marketing move while at the same time honoring Doyt Perry by putting a massive likeness of the man on the stadium named for him.
Now, about that statue that will list Doyt L. Perry's coaching numbers and touch on his legacy. . . .
