Opening Observations

Post by Rollo83 »

What a great day in BG today. Had some pie at Myles and then watched BG beat Troy in Coach Clawson's debut.

Had just a few thoughts on the game...

1. Clawson is smart enough to keep most of our offense in tact. Yes we had a few fullback sets with Tyler under center, but for the most part he was in the shotgun all night and it looked a lot like Brandon's offense. Again kudos to the coach to realize the talent he has and an offense that works.

2. Much more discipline and confident team tonight. When we would get behind by 14 points the past few years it was usually goodnight, ballgame over! Yes, we had some penalties but that's to be expected in an opener. Plus, didn't see any bonehead penalties.

3. We won the battle in the trenches. Our D-line put continual pressure on Troy quarterback, while our O-line did a helluva job protecting Tyler. I don't think he got sacked all night? Those Troy defensive ends with "pro potential" never were a factor.

4. Lets talk about Tyler. What a great performance from the senior. Some of his throws were absolute ropes. He could of had another 100 yard and a touchdown easy if it wasn't for some drops by his receivers. Immediately after the game I watched Tyler and Clawson embrace. Not sure I ever seen that emotion with the players and Brandon? It looked to me like the players really enjoy playing for Clawson.

5. Not sure why but it seemed like we had a lot of cramping tonight on a cool evening. Not sure what's up with that. Conditioning? Hydration? At least half a dozen guys pulled up with cramps during the game.

6. Great to see a coach make some adjustments at half time.

7. Love Freddie Barnes, but I hope we develop some receivers to go with him. When we needed a play, Tyler locked on him and it usually worked. As other teams start to watch film, they'll start taking Freddie away. Others will need to step up.

8. Running game as a little disappointing. Only success we had was on misdirections and counters. We simply coul not run straight at them at all.

9. Special teams still a work in progress. Punting was great but kick coverage was poor. We eventually had to pooch the kickoffs because we couldn't cover them. First PAT barely got off teh ground and through the uprights. Good to see Phillips get a short FG to get his confidence. We'll see when the games in the balance and we need a 45 yarder to win a game?

Couple of notes. Levi Brown chucked 3 picks all of last season, but threw 2 to us in the second half alone. Also, Troy gave up just 8 4th down conversions all of last year and gave up 3 on 3 4th down conversion attempts to us tonight.

Sweet.

Don't know if this has been said but Freddie Barnes set a BGSU record for catches in a game with 15!

Attendance was only 14,514. But, The Doyt was absolutely rocking and I couldn't believe how many students were there! Great energy from the student section, loud and proud all night.

I can see that considering the west stands were packed, but the east stands were rather skimpy on fans...good showing by the Troy fans though! Also, I'll have to agree that seeing that many students stay for the entire length of the game was just awesome!! Hopefully that keeps up regardless of if we lose a game or two

Sweet.

Good point on the 4th down conversions. Rock solid there. A little disappointed with the 3rd down conversion rate though.
