John Saunders ESPN

Post by dforde »

Who did ESPN Sports Center anchor John Saunders play college hockey for? This morning on the Sports Center 30th anniversary show with Chris Berman and Bob Lee, he mentioned playing "against Ken Morrow in college" during a segment about the 1980 Miracle on Ice.

I think he might have been a goalie for Western...

Forward for WMU.
It has been awile, but I think that he went by Barry Saunders at that time.

John's brother Bernie Saunders played for WMU from 76-79. Maybe you are confusing them? Incidentally, Bernie's son played defense for Miami of Ohio.

John played defense for Western Michigan from 74-76.

No wonder I did not remember John Saunders; Bernie is the one that I remembered.

Hockeydb has VERY incomplete records for Western Michigan. Nothing before 1975-76 and only about 10 players listed for 1976-79. Hard to say how much John played. I know they have a banner of him hanging in the arena although that could be based on his later espn fame.

WMU's media guide backs up the "two games" theory. Page 28 or 29 or so if you don't believe me. :-D

Didn't say I didn't believe you, I was doubting hockeydb since they were missing many stats. Funny that he acts like he had some glorious college career when it looks more like he was a walk-on coat-tailing off his brother.

Just messing around. I was pretty skeptical of hockeydb, too, especially after his speech about "playing against Ken Morrow in college". Although in fairness, maybe his two-game career was during a series with BG. :-D

My wife worked on a paper in a computer lab at the same time as Rob Blake. So, she practically won the Stanley Cup, right? :D
