So how did they look?

Re: So how did they look?
We have two good goalies, who play somewhat different styles, I like Hammond he is clearly an outstanding goalie who is on top of his game. Eno is about back to where he was prior to injury, and Im sure it wont take him long.
Samules-Thomas...OMG this guys goiing to amazing once he gets used to his line mates, big, fast, physical...I hope he back checks a bit harder than what I saw yesterday, but he will in short order be as big a fan favoirte as Page, solway, kantola etc...
We have a good group, sure Wilfred laurie is not M, but we out played them way better than we did last year.
As far as game goes. The forcheck was lacking a bit, and some of our offense needs work, our d is tough and likely stronger than what we had to end the season lastyear. so if we get these guys throwing the puck at the net more, things will happen.

Re: So how did they look?
I hope you are wrong on the team speed issue. Remember, we still have two freshmen dmen that have not played and they are both excellent skaters. The three that played yesterday looked good overall speed wise. I will add that I remember one or two times where dmen were caught a little flat footed in transitioning, hopefully that is what I saw.
Freshmen Forwards, Pagaeu and Friesmuth looked to have excellent speed. Samuel/Thomas has very good speed. Rodriquez has very good speed too. I am not sure where the overall team speed has dropped? I would have to disagree with the high scoring games due to our goal tending
Let's see how Ferris does vs our Canadian friends today. They play at Ferris today at 2:00.
I predict a better then bottom four finish this year.

Re: So how did they look?
I thought the team looked pretty well yesterday. According to Coach Williams, they were kind of nervous. Gripping their sticks pretty tight, but got more relaxed as the game went on. He said plenty of things to work on, He wasn't really happy with the last two goals of theirs. It started getting chippy towards the end, and we were in the box way too much for his liking. On David Solway, He said he is pretty beat up from that hit. He doubts that David will play next weekend against Minny State. Plus, if you remember, Kai and James Perkin can't play on Friday night because of the fight at Ohio State last March. This weekend could be pretty tough. Goaltenders might have to come up huge for us. All in all, I really liked what I saw yesterday. They'll only get better as the season goes along.

I agree with some slower play, we are missing the speed of cepis, mcilrath, but I think we will see some more speed as time goes, I think some nerves will settle down and guys will know where to find each other with out looking or thinking to much about it. I was disapointed in seeing some lost battles and no battle made for pucks in the offensive zone, and seeing 3 of our guys damn near center ice, I know no one wants to get beat, but at the same time when the puck is on the boards at the hashmarks, get in there and make something happen, dont just back off....and again I think those goes to our guys still getting to know each other and doing their best to make the most off good opportunities.pdt1081 wrote:We got beat getting to loose pucks and getting back to our zone. The team as a whole just doesn't seem as fast as last year. It was great to see the style of play, but to be sucessful at the D1 level we'll need a lot more speed.Spectator wrote: I remember us getting beat on the pp and giving them some quality chances, speed was a factor, but I think positioning was a bigger factor, I believe both times that I saw that happen, it was a forward at the point and they did not take the proper position while the other team transitioned. Did you feel overall that we had good team speed? I am curious, I know that it is hard to judge after one exhibition game, but what the hey, we might just as well discuss.
We're gonna see one of two things happen this year. A lot of high scoring games at both ends (8-6, etc), or we're gonna adapt a more defensive trap style of play.
I dont think anyone will score 6 on this team, I think we were going to see a lot of tight hockey.
Re: So how did they look?
Tough to tell as this was an exhibition. Speed or not, I was impressed by the intensity of the Falcons. After 1-1, they pretty much dominated. As others have mentioned, Finegan is fun to watch and had a good game. I'm his fan. Kantola still lays the lumber, but serves the minutes for it. All in all, I was pleased with what I saw. Bought a T-shirt from the Falcon daughters too ... lovely young ladies who carry along their father's legacies.
Re: So how did they look?
I bought one as well. Very cool to see that not only did they follow their dads to BG, but they have a great passion for the brown and orange!rally wrote:Bought a T-shirt from the Falcon daughters too ... lovely young ladies who carry along their father's legacies.
At the dinner for the 1959 football team, Ron Blackledge talked about how he brought his grandkids up to look at BG. Win, lose or draw, at the end of the day, I still love the "family-ness" of BGSU!

Thanks. He must have been happy to get his first W. Ferris just lost 3-1 vs Wilfrid Laurier. Ferris looked very good but the WL goalie was just too tough. WL was badly out shot. I would think that we will have good games vs Ferris.falcons86 wrote:I talked to Coach Williams at the football game.

Considering the "offense" that Cepis and McIlrath provided last year I'll settle for slightly slower if it means more goals. Saturday was the first time since the exhibition game against Windsor two years ago that the falcons scored 7 goals in a game.MACMAN wrote:pdt1081 wrote:

I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.
Re: So how did they look?
Macllrath hardly produced, sure, and Cepis' season (his part of it) wasn't great... but his season the year before was amazing. He was truly one of our more dynamic players. Explosive and could make plays. Not sure its fair to compare the two.rood wrote:Considering the "offense" that Cepis and McIlrath provided last year I'll settle for slightly slower if it means more goals. But thats in the past, and we could definitely use another explosive player like that to provide a spark when needed.

McIllrath did, while he not get the points, he made a lot of them happen and too often ended up one touch from getting a point, teams keyed on him, and he still could go down deep and win battles, and or carry right past and through other teams. That said he is not here any more and its not worth dwelling on, I am happy with the guys we have, and confident they can get it done.

and one other thing I noticed was the guy driving the Zamboni, needs to actually cut the ice...it looked like he had it set up to cut it after public skate.

Re: So how did they look?
Eno has never looked great in net, esp after his injury last season... he improved some but not too much from his Freshman year. Despite Jr. Status he basically has the experience of a SO goaltender and still needs quite a bit of work and refinement. I see Hammond becoming our top goaltender by the end of the season.toddpav wrote:Spectator,
For the most part, your assessment of the game was right on. However, and I may be not liked for saying this, but I don't think Eno looked that great in net. Granted, I watched the game walking around the arena everywhere ( I was taking photos), but he just looked sloppy. Missed a couple of easy glove grabs and handled the puck poorly behind his own net.
Our new goalie looked great. Had some amazing saves and also missed opportunities, but he was solid overall.
Overall, we did a great job, but we lack speed, and that may hurt us in conference play.
Re: So how did they look?
I thought it might be fun to mention that WLU BEAT Ferris 3-1 on Sunday... I know it's early, but it does prove that WLU is no cupcake!
