How good is Freddie's year?

Coming into the year, the BG record for receptions in a game was 14. Not only has he broken that record three times, he's AVERAGING 12.5 catches a game. Amazing.

Man, that is just a ridonkulous stat 6 games into the season. I doubt I would believe it if I hadn't witnessed it.

I think one of my favorite parts of the game today was Hanford Dixon (sober! - I couldn't resist ) was dogging on Freddie for having so many catches and so few yards this season during the first quarter. And then Freddie made him look like an AZZ hole. Fantastic.

I really have nothing against the Big Dog - except for the whole driving drunk through my neighborhood deal. I just thought this was kind of funny/ironic/awesome.

Barnes has 75 receptions in SIX games...and that ranks 5th for a SEASON in BG history. Absolutely sick. Freddie began the day with 195 career receptions, fourth-best in school history, passed Robert Redd (211) and Cole Magner (215) on that list and now sits second in school history with 217 receptions. Charles Sharon is first in BGSU history with 232 catches.

All he needs to do is catch 16 balls next week at Ball State and the record is his. He'll have that by the middle of the 2nd quarter.

Just sick...Hodges had 8 catches and if we can get a couple more WR's to step up, this could be even crazier.

No question Barnes was simply amazing today! Maybe most impressive was him coming up with Geter's fumble on the punt late in the game!!! But damn, Barnes' two dropped TD's last week vs. Ohio are still killing me....he could have had 50 catches today, but those dropped TD's last week are going to haunt us all season, mark my words. Ohio looks to be cruising along now and we don't face Temple and both are positioned nicely in the MAC East right now. Still, today was a sight to see with Sheehan & Barnes hooking up! Helluva game for those two!

Freddie Barnes got a helmet sticker on College Football Final for his 22 catch, 278 yard performance today. His performance was only 1 catch shy of the I-A record of 23.

The guy is incredible. Simply unbelievable.

I was wondering what the 1A record was. It's a shame that the game was still so much in question at the end that we couldn't throw him a quick one to get get him to the record. Even still that was the greatest performance by a WR that I've ever seen.

Yeah, he dropped two last week. LAST WEEK. Let it go...that was a team loss to OH and I believe Freddie wasn't the only guy to drop a TD pass. And we won yesterday...against Kent.

In any event, I think he made up for it last night.

Those two links give the D1-A reception and recieving yard leaders thus far. Freddie leads the recieving yard list by 10 yards, and the receptions list by 28. It's absolutely amazing what he has been doing this year.

As for his drops, he is bound to have a few. Granted, those few were ugly drops, but he is still having a monster year. To be honest, I haven't been impressed with Sheehan lately at all, and that makes Freddie's stats all the more impressive.

Question is: How are we going to replace him?

Here's hoping we know the answer to that question by the end of the season.

I don't think we can expect anyone to replace it with those numbers, but Jones has come on very strong lately and we have a number of other talented receivers, too. (Though I can't think of the seniors off the top of my head there.)

With a new style of offense we may not need a receiver to make 20 catches to win a game.

If you think Clawson will go to full backs and tight ends when we are lighting up the scoreboards with this style of offense you are sadly mistaken. It's the "if you can't beat'em, join'em" analogy. He hasn't changed much of anything this year anyway--why would he? Everything was set--and he even has a healthy Freddie Barnes! (Barnes was never the same last year after the Boise game)

The NCAA FBS record for receptions in a season is 142 by Manny Hazard of Houston in 1989. Freddie would have to maintain a pretty torrid pace to reach that. The most ever by a MAC player was 105 by Dante Ridgeway of Ball State in 2004. That mark is clearly within reach.
