A friendly, alcohol-related reminder

If you're headed to Muncie and plan to tailgate, remember to bring your cold beer across the state line with ya, or find a liquor store. Indiana is a little 19th century-ish with their booze laws. Fortunately, liquor stores are about everywhere, but it's still a pain to not be able to drive through a beer stand and have a case passed through your window.

Oh yeah, I remember that headache coming home from the Pittsburgh game last year. Three grocery stores and a Wal-Mart later, we finally found somewhere that sold it by the 48-bottle case that could direct us to where we could buy a 12.

And yeah, I'm headed to Muncie. I meant to give ya a shout about that. I might just head up and meet the old folks at Damons around 10, or I might be daring and head up a little earlier and tailgate a bit. Have to head right in to work afterwards, unfortunately.

Probably headed to the Miami(OH) game in November, as well.

A couple counties in SE Ohio used to be (not Athens) when I was in school. Not sure if they STILL are. Get it? STILL? New Straightsville had the Moonshine Festival and was in a dry county at the time. Feds were on hand to destroy the Festival product as soon as it was made. New a couple guys involved in the production of adult beverages on a blackmarket level. Knew some in Athens that were farming a more modern form of adult anesthesia.

Indiana.
No Alcohol sales on Sunday (except resteurants and bars).
No cold beer in grocery stores.
No beer at gas stations.

In Indiana you learn not to depleat your supplies on Saturday night. You also develop a tolerance for warmish beverages that you just picked up at the grocery.

Kinda like how Lynchburg, TN is in a dry county. The Jack Daniel's Distillery is supposedly grandfathered in as far as making it, but they have to ship it over county lines to a Distribution Center and sell it from there, so they're technically not selling it in that county.

One of my favorite stories about the history of BGSU is how the final decision on location was coming down between BG and Napoleon and Bowling Green got the edge because it was dry. Oops!

Westerville, OH, where I'm from, was actually a dry city up until very recently. In the last 5 years or so, they've just started allowing local establishments to serve beer. I remember walking into a Chipotle outside of Westerville and seeing Corona for sale there and being totally shocked.

I have a feeling the happiest people about the recent relaxation of the laws are the students at Otterbein College.

And, just for fun, proof that Westerville took its former status as "The Dry Capital of the World" seriously. From Wikipedia: "Twice, in 1875 and 1879, businessman Henry Corbin opened a saloon in Westerville, and each time the townspeople blew up his establishment with gunpowder."

If my memory of yearly field trips to the Anti-Saloon League Museum at the Public Library serves me correctly, that sounds right to me.
