Could Scheidler be an NFL prospect?

Post by Bleeding Orange »

I have seen absolutely no talk about this whatsoever, and there very well could be a reason for that. But, as I was watching the game tonight, I started to think for the first time that he very well might be. With his size, speed, ability to block, and most importantly his ability to seemingly catch anything thrown near him, he seems to be someone who might be able to sneak into a camp and stick with a team as a UDFA.

I've demonstrated and happily proclaimed my total ignorance of anything and everything related to the NFL, but this seems to make something resembling sense to me. I'm very curious to know what others might think about it.

I also do not know much about the NFL and such but seems to me Scheidler would be undersized to play TE in the NFL as he would be too small to run block?

I think Jimmy had all of zero drops last year. He's had a few this year and that could hurt his chances. I blame the drops on his injury against Marshall. Bummer. I don't believe Jimmy is too small for an NFL TE. Jeremy Shockey is listed at 6-5, 251, and Jimmy is listed at 6-4, 255. When healthy he's an excellent route runner and has great hands. He's not the best TE blocker I've seen but he's certainly good. I'd say he's worth a FA contract for sure.

I could see him getting a look as an UDFA, but don't be surprised if he's one of the first guys cut.

He's a pure pass catching TE. He plays in a wide open offense where he's not often asked to block, and really hasn't demonstrated that he can be a good blocking TE. NFL teams will peg him as mostly a pass catching TE. Unless he shows REALLY well in predraft stuff that he's a good blocker that will be what he's looked at as by everybody. Unfortunately for a guy that is going to be considered a one dimensional pass catching TE, he is not NEARLY athletic enough.

Yeah, he catches the balls on his hands, but when you look for a pass catching TE you look for a guy that can go up and get the ball in traffic and guys that can beat NFL LBs with quickness. I don't see Schiedler having the athleticism to do either of those things.

Size wise, he's right about NFL average (assuming his listed measurements are close). I just don't see him as an NFL prospect though...just doesn't have the athleticism. Modern day NFL TEs are freaky athletes...probably some of the best size/athleticism guys on the field.

While I have certainly not formed an opinion one way or another on Scheidler's pro prospects, I do have to say that I have always been impressed with his blocking ability. I've made it a point this year to visually key on him whenever I get the chance simply because I am fascinated by his ability to work himself open, and I've never really noticed him missing a block. Maybe I just haven't been paying close enough attention, though. And clearly, you're dealing with a different class of athlete in the NFL.

And I don't disagree with you at all about NFL tight ends. Although I watch very few NFL games outside of those involving the Browns, so my standards for judging talent are probably a heck of a lot lower than everyone else.

Some teams are going with a TE/FB slash option or an Hback. Schiedler might not be fluid enough for the Hback spot but he could be a FB/TE if he can block.

Look at Brandon Pettigrew of the Lions...good enough blocker to be thought of as an extra OT (he tore up Brian Orapko last year in college) and he's a good enough athlete to be a downfield threat as a reciever. That's the prototype physically....I don't know if Jimmy has the quickness to make it as a situational "receiving TE". He does seem to have the hands though...
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
