The Most Important Game is Today

Post by Redwingtom »

Well, actually there are two of them:

Kent State @ Temple - 1:00
Northern Illinois @ Ohio - 2:00

We need Kent and NIU victories to have any shot at a MAC East crown.

GO FLASHES!!!
GO HUSKIES!!!

What you said Tom. I don't think anybody actually knows what will happen if we end up in a 4-way tie for the East. I've already heard several different interpretations of the rules, one for Ohio, one for us, one for Kent. I'm not sure the MAC office truly knows the truth because they probably haven't thought about a situation like what we could have if Kent, Ohio, BG, and Temple all end up tied.

But, to get there, we need these two dominoes to fall. GO HUSKIES AND GO FLASHES!!!

Athletic directors take turns drinking shots. Last one standing wins.

Ha! Does anybody know if Greg Christopher drinks? Has he ever been spotted at a BG tailgate, however doubtful that might be? We need to know if he's got a tolerance high enough for us to win this. :-D

I consulted the MAC office....after being confronted with the scenario they stood dumbfounded and decided that they would use the 3-way Coin Flip process rule used in Friday Night Lights.
There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!

At halftime Kent has a one point lead over Temple.

Then, true to Kenthagian form, the Flashes totally self-destruct in the 3rd quarter. Temple up 33-10 with 1 minute left in the 3rd.

Barring a miracle, this is the end of our shot at an East title. It wouldn't surprise me if in the end we find out that our chances were already in the toilet after the first MAC game, by virtue of Temple going 8-0, or Ohio going 7-1, depending on the outcome of next week's game in Athens.

EDIT: It's all over in Philadelphia, Temple wins 47-13. Nice second half, Kent. Here's hoping you lose to Buffalo next week and not become bowl eligible. Good riddance.

Actually, the tiebreaker procedure is posted on the MAC website:

Divisional Champions

The divisional championship shall be decided on conference winning percentage. If two or more teams are tied for the championship, they shall be considered divisional co-champions. The following tie-breaking formula shall be used to determine which team will represent that division in the MAC Championship game:

1. Head-to-head competition

a. In the event of a multiple-team (two or more teams) tie, the team with the best head-to-head record amongst the tied teams wins the tie-breaker;

b. In a two-team tie, head-to-head competition will be the first criteria;

c. If two teams did not play, the second criteria is used to break the tie;

2. Record of tied teams within the division [versus rank order, highest to lowest, of division teams]

a. The above tie-breaker procedure is used to determine rank order in the division;

b. Team(s) eliminated in the second tie-breaker criterion are not included in further consideration in the tie- breaking formula;

c. Head-to-head competition is again used to break the tie between the remaining tied teams.

3. Comparison of conference winning percentage of cross-over opponents of tied teams;

a. Tie-breaker is awarded to the team whose cross-division opponents had the best cumulative conference winning percentage;

b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.

4. If multiple teams remain tied, the final tie-breaker is as follows:

a. Record of tied teams versus cross-division opponents in rank order;

b. Head-to-head competition is used to break the tie between the two tied teams.

So I don't think we had a chance with the tiebreaker anyway as we only would have been 1-1 and our only shot at a tie with Temple was for OU to beat them and that would have made OU 2-1 in the head-to head games.

We can fix all this bullcrap if we just kick Temple out of the league and that way we can play the entire East every year and then Toledo and 2 other West teams every year. Sounds good to me!!!
