Paper: BG vs. Idaho in H Bowl

Post by 1987alum »

Linky

Article focuses on NIU, but the crux is this - Idaho will fill one spot and the Humanitarian Bowl is looking at BG or NIU to fill the other. NIU played Idaho this year, so BG is the likely choice.

That would definitely rule out a bowl trip for the Freaks. LOL! But then again, only Detroit would be doable this year with car repairs and other the crap.

Just get a bowl bid....

I really love Boise and I would take the Humanitarian Bowl over no bowl, but I really don't like this. We would have extremely poor fan support. I would seriously consider going, but it would absolutely require flying. Driving that far would just be too much. I'll give it some thought.

I planned to take a trip to Denver to see a freind next year, then buzz up to Boise for the UT game-checked the distance: ten hour drive from Denver. The gigantic emptiness of that area is almost overwhelming. And its another twenty or thirty some hours to Denver from here.

Straight out of Idaho, they say it's "likely" that BG will go to the Humanitarian Bowl.

So much for a neutral field. (Although from some of the hate in the comments, I bet our friends from Boise will show up wearing their orange. )

That would probably be a good matchup for BG, but my god why BOISE? I make it a routine to NOT watch the Humanitarian Bowl just because it's played on that field. UGH, I hate that monstrosity.

This AZZ-wipe has alot of respect for the MAC and BG. What a maroon!

Why oh why would the H-Bowl contract with the fifth place team of the MWC? What credibility does that give the H-Bowl and the WAC? None! What a slam for this community. And then Bowling Green? The Big Sky could whip the MAC
The WAC should put their foot down and require the H-Bowl to seek a real team. Call the Big East or CUSA but a crappy MAC team? This will kill the H-Bowl. Freeze to pay to see a MAC team? No Way!

It would be interesting to play a team we haven't played before, much less this season, as the Marshall-EagleBank rumors lend to believe, but I can't imagine this will do anything for our travel numbers, which are so key for future bowl consideration.

Then again, if we *did* play Marshall again at this point in the season, I bet we'd roll 'em.

I say we would have support in Boise.

I think we made friends when BGSU hosted Boise this year. Certainly their fans felt warmly welcomed, and I would bet that those locals would gladly enjoy a seasonal "night-cap" by rooting for a BGSU team. We treated them right when they came way out here, they seem to respect the Falcons in any case. What is to say they might not show in slightly better than average numbers to support a surrogate home team.

If the BG football team does go to Boise then our athletic department needs to get Boise State fans to purchase tickets through our ticket office to boost our numbers!

Does anyone know what attendence has been like in this bowl in the past? Have any teams brought a lot of fans? I can't imagine that bowls considering BG in the future are going to hold it against us for not travelling well to Boise in late December to play the Fighting Potatoes of the University of Idaho.

I would guess that is exactly what they seek to do. It may sound silly, but I really do think that is the exact direction to go with it. Make it a feel-good story. They should cheer for BGSU going there, as it makes Boise look better. In any case, whomever is at the game will rely on local fans for support, no reason to cede that to whomever.

I've seen the game several years in a row. The power teams can and do win, but that said, they can and do look dejected being out on the Smurf Turf. Kids might not want to play in Detroit, but at least it is indoors.

It could be a good matchup depending.

The past few years, without Boise State, this bowl has posted attendance numbers in the mid 20s.

True enough, yet they also don't play in the biggest of stadiums it is worth nothing. But then, the fact it has survived this many years, has good TV support, and the bonus of being Bosie's home (blue) helps. All I've heard indicates the folks out there do run a first rate program for visiting teams.

If this does come to fruition, perhaps we could have a promotion for Boise fans to buy tickets through our office - maybe a free hat or t-shirt with the purchase of two or more tickets, or something. But then again, that probably breaks some sort of ridiculous NCAA regulation. Who knows.
