Talk about the Buckeyes the Wolverines the Hilltoppers the Ducks the Beavers the Chanticleers... or anyone else who isn't BG or an opponent in this forum.

Coaching Carousel

Post by Globetrotter »

For some reason the Coaching Carousel always fascinates me. Watching the big time schools drop coaches and the dominoes fall is something I love to follow but I know little about who the possibilities are.

So far here are the firings.

Akron J.D. Brookhart 6 TBA
Louisville Steve Kragthorpe 3 TBA
Marshall Mark Snyder 5 TBA
Memphis Tommy West 9 Larry Porter
Notre Dame Charlie Weis 5 TBA
San Jose State Dick Tomey* 5 TBA
UNLV Mike Sanford 5 TBA
Virginia Al Groh 9 TBA
Western Kentucky David Elson 7 Willie Taggart

The two biggest jobs appear to be Va and ND not in that order.

The biggest names for ND seem to be
Brian Kelly from Cincy
Jim Harbough from Stanford

At UV
Al Golden from Temple
Richmonds coach.

The only two hirings so far were guys who were alums at the schools. There are a ton of questions left.

Who will be the next coach at UC if Kelly leaves?

Any rumors about the opening at Akron? Louisville? Marshall?

(I have to think that Clawson would have been rumored at atleast 2 of those places had he stayed at Richmond.)

They were reporting on the radio here in Columbus yesterday that OSU co-Defensive Coordinator, Luke Fickell, is a candidate for the Akron job. I believe he was an assistant there before joining the OSU staff. He was also rumored to be a candidate for both the BG and UT jobs last year, if I remember right.

I'm going to go WAY out on a limb here and it would take a lot of s**t to happen this way, but I would not be surprised if he is on Notre Dame's list somewhere. No he is not a big time coach like they probably are looking for, but so many guys seem to shy away from ND because of their academic requirements. And there just isn't a compelling coach, other than Urban, that would seem to be the guy that would want to go to ND. Kelly might be the only one. So I'm just saying that Coach Clawson has done things the right way everywhere he's been and that ND might already have a list of 'secondary' coaches that they would consider after Meyer, Stoops, Kelly, Harbaugh, etc all back away from the job. Remember, Christopher had his eye on Clawson well before we had an opening. Just saying that ND might have him in the back of their mind also.
