Interesting and impressive notes about Oakland's coach...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Oakland Coach Greg Kampe, who is in his 21st year of guiding the Golden Grizzlies, is a 1978 graduate of BGSU with a bachelor's degree in business and journalism. He lettered in both football (1975-77) and basketball (1976-78) for the Falcons.

Kampe personally combined excellence as an athlete and in the classroom in college. He is the only athlete in MAC history to earn first team all-Academic honors in both football and basketball. He earned dean's list honors with a 3.40 grade point average at BGSU, and received the President's Award as an outstanding senior student.

Very impressive....

I remember Greg Kampe well. In football, he was a CB and punter. He once set a record for longest punt when the return guy lost the ball in the sun, let it hit and it rolled about thirty yards. He was a backup PG in hoops. Not a good player in either, but hustle, desire, etc. Kind of guy people on the other teams hated.

Why is he not on track to be a coach here? Why not an assistant job at the very least (in the past)? Is Oakland Division 1 or 2.

He really hasn't accomplished much at Oakland. Seems ot be just content on being there. The last go round (after Larranaga) he wasn't even really mentioned- at least not before Rich Walker or Steve Merfeld or even Noftz.

Don't think he is all that personable either, but I don't know the man so I can't say for certain.

Oakland is D-1. They weren't when he got there, and he built them into a D-1 program.

Kampe was my couselor at Hoosier Basketball Camp in Angola, Indiana in 1974 and 1975. Great guy!

The timing of him taking the BG job has never seemed right. I think he has had offers to move but has been content in building Oakland into a D1 program.
