UT facilities

Post by factman »

I talked to one of the people that is working on the new "fieldhouse at UT and he said they were doing everything on the "cheap" and it was a pretty bare bones building, especially in comparison to ours. Between the Sebo and Perry Fieldhouse, looks like we have quite a lead in facilities for the department, and that is not counting the Stroh Center! :-D
Here is a video that Fox ran on the new Fetterman facility at UT:

WOW! I'm impressed. It looks amazingly like a pole barn.

Sadly, most indoor practice facilities do, including ours.

I think its the nature of the beast- to put that much real estate under one roof without any internal supports costs a lot to start with. Not sure what a lot of frills get you. BG has a nice track and hoops facility which UT won't have (hoops, yes-track, no- a sore point with me after I donated soem pretty good jack with the understanding there WOULD be a track), but yes, it looks like a pole barn.

I'm not thrilled with the exterior of ours except as it ties into the outdoor track and provides permanent seating for that facility whcih looks very classy. Once its done and landscaped I hope it will be less barnish but it will serve its intended purpose just fine. The hoops game today was almost unbearable in the walkways around the west side because they had just finished the floors in the basketball practice facility and the lacquer smell was overbearing. But it is progress-the team may be using that facility before the football one is done.

The exterior of the building is less than inspiring. However, on the track side (east) a set of concrete, permanent stands slope down from the building. It dresses up the track facility, not the IPF.

Maybe an indoor track is an option for the future.

Well, I learned tonight that there is a "sort of" track with sprint lanes and running lanes for training but not meet capable. BG's is short on space but is pretty nice for meets. I've heard there are plans for an indoor eventually but I'll believe it when I see it.

From what I've seen, the UT complex should be very nice. The did a very good job renovating Savage Arena and now a basketball practice facitlty and indoor turf practice facility will be attached. It also includes an indoor golf facility. A new track was put in a few years ago, and now it's surrounded by stone columns and steel fencing. It will work out well having so many sports facilities right next to each other.
