Why exactly has he not been redshirted yet and will he be next year?

He got some PT this year (scored against Temple, too!), so I doubt he gets a redshirt this year. As for next, who knows? Probably depends on if Stover can get his academics in order, if Johnson gets switched to RB (one of many rumors swirling around him) or any other number of possibilities.

GFitch: Since Danny Macon played in the GMAC Bowl, he's NOT going to be redshirted this year...he also played a bit in a few other games prior to injuring his hamstring. I'm hoping to see a lot of him next year, as I feel he's a solid RB, who needs playing time to be effective, like most RB's do.
As to Stover, I've just about given up on him from what I hear. Never panned out to what U.Myer expected either... guess you have to go to class at BG in order to play...fancy that!

I would like 2 years of Macon to turn to instead of just one.

Germaine: Fair enough. I'm purely speculating here, but I'd guess that he wasn't red-shirted this year because the coaches knew going into the season that Stover might not be around by year's end. If they stuck the RS on him, that left them with Pope, Lane and two freshmen at RB.

Why wasn't he redshirted his freshman year? Geez, who knows, but that's a good question. I mean, when he was a freshman, we had Joe Alls as the workhorse and P.J. getting a lot of touches, too. B.J. was the third back and you had Godfrey Lewis as a RS Senior at the bottom of the depth chart. Maybe someone else can add some perspective, but it does seem like he could have been a RS his freshman year.

I doubt you'll see him get redshirted now, though. You just don't see a lot of kids get redshirted their junior year, unless it's a medical redshirt.

OK; I get your point now...but I doubt that he'd want a redshirt year next year after getting some PT this year, and probably more if he hadn't been hurt. He's a talented kid who's in somewhat of a Catch 22 situation re: having 2 or 3 established RB's in front of him.

Yeah, its hard to know why he wasn't redshirted as a freshmen. I highly doubt he will be redshirted next year, though. You hardly ever see that.

That makes no sense though. You can redshirt a player going into a season and then play him later in the year if need be. This happened with OU's quarterbacks last year, I believe it was Everson that got to play and blew his redshirt b/c the first and second string went down.

There must have been some other reason for it.

It's a shame to see that Stover didn't pan out but I can probably see his side of the story... recruted here to play and then have to sit behind all-MAC Pope and the comparatively over-rated Lane for three years. I might be frusterated too.

B.J. Lane overrated? He's only averaged 5.4 a carry over the past 3 seasons, can catch the ball out of the backfield, and averaged over 23 yards per this year on kickoff returns.

Ever since I saw Stover in a playoff game his senior year at St. Ed's., I've wanted to see him in our running back rotation. I think maybe his effort (or lack thereof) in the classroom and on the practice field probably had something to do with him not getting ahead of Pope and Lane.

Swam, you are exactly right. Lane is not overrated in any way, shape or form. We all want depth. Well, depth means that you've got guys on the bench that can play. It keeps everybody sharp.

I was thinking about this after it was initially posted and I realize that the intent of the post was not suggesting to redshirt Macon next year, but asking if it was available this year.

While it would take a major break from the norm, why not go ahead and redshirt Macon next year unless you move him to LB which is conceivable as well.

By redshirting him, you save a year of eligibility and still have the services of Pope, Lane and possibly Petey Hood. It would actually give Petey or whatever other back we have additional looks and develop depth at the running back position before PJ and BJ take off. I think a year off could be really beneficial to Dan and to BG as a "program" down the road.

I am glad to know that I am not the only one who thinks BJ is an excellent player. I think we would start for a lot of other MAC teams. He has a lot of talent and I think he has handled having to play behind Pope rather well. He has made a good name for himself in other parts of the game. (special teams) I feel if Pope got hurt the dropoff would be slight, and I think Pope is top 3 player on the team.

I don't think that can be stated enough, and I think it speaks volumes to the "team first" or "family" mentality (with or without all the quotes, you choose ) of this program. With as many players that bitch and moan about not getting playing time, or not getting any touches, or not getting touches in the red zone or whatever, you rarely, if ever, hear that kind of talk around BG football. Hell, even during the stretch of this season where we seemed to put teams away with the pass first, and run occasionally, you didn't hear anything out of PJ about not getting the carries.

Me too. Especially after watching the games this afternoon and evening. One play in the Rose Bowl, Edwards got popped by a couple guys, and they showed a closeup of a #7 running his mouth in Edwards' face. Upon further review, the hit was made by a #2 and a #4, with no #7 anywhere in sight. I can't stand to see players make a tackle and run 15 yards away from the play. It seemed like it had gotten better a few years ago, but all came back this afternoon. And I won't EVEN begin to get into all the crap that turned my stomach during the FSU game. Ugh.

As neutral as I am about Iowa, it was great to see them pull that win out today and the raw emotion of the moment go, without anyone worrying about separating themselves from the pack to show their jersey number to the cameras.
