Turner Gill To Kansas

Post by TheMACer »

It looks like Turner Gill will be the first MAC coach poached this year. It's been reported that he's taking the Kansas job.

Boy...a 20-30 overall record gets Gill a BCS head coaching job? What a joke.

In all fairness, considering where Buffalo was when Gill took over, winning 20 games there (plus a league championship) in four years is nothing short of amazing. Another couple years and maybe two more bowl games and they probably would've named the stadium after him that program was so bad before he arrived. Probably the best hire for Kansas, especially considering Gill recruited that area of the country so well for so many years for Nebraska.

It will be alot tougher for Buffalo to make a hire that prevents them from slipping back into misery again than it will be for Turner Gill to win the Big 12 North at Kansas.

I think Gill is a great recruiter, but I'm not convinced he's a great game day coach. With better playcalling down the stretch, he had BG beat this year. Last year, how many of their games came down to the final couple of plays? A couple different bounces of the ball and UB has a losing record last year. Hell, they were even lucky enough to face Ball State when Nate Davis was sick with the flu.
I think luck played a huge role in their team last year, and I think this year's team was basically on par with last year's team, maybe even better because of the improved defense, but they didn't get the lucky bounces this year. I'm not sold at all he's that amazing of an overall coach and I would not be surprised if KU takes a turn for the worse. Great recruiter, though - I never thought division 1 talent could be recruited to Buffalo.
