Toledo Season Assessment
Q & A with Coach Beckman
The funniest part for me: "When we show our recruits the Fetterman building or the Glass Bowl press tower..."
Seriously, he uses that stupid looking double-wide high-rise for recruiting purposes?
He also seems to lay a lot of the blame on injuries, which is weak IMHO, and special teams which sounds strangely like our former coach, LOL.
And come to think of it, I don't remember reading much of anything about failures or room for improvement by the coaching staff! Hummmmm...

Oh, I like how he starts off saying that he isn't a stats guy, but then goes on for paragraph after paragraph giving stats about how they did this year. Whatever dude.

Tough to compete with "Doyt Perry, The Gem of the MAC", but we hope to draw the occasional two star recruit from rural areas with a visit to "The Double-wide in the Sky". Then maybe some big kids who got Associate's Degrees from somewhere and might wanna try football, but felt the stadium at Bluffton just didn't offer quite enough. After all, we're just a humble little university, trying to make our way amongst athletic giants like BG.

After a little more consideration, I can see why he would point to the press tower. It will distract unsuspecting recruits away from the "even more high-schoolish than the Doyt" visiting side and that disgrace of a "facility" in the end zone...LOLh2oville rocket wrote:Redwingtom wrote:Q & A with Coach Beckman

P.S.: We own your arse in every major athletic program (and even most of the minor ones) except Men's Basketball (barely). Not to mention all the comparable academic programs the two schools have.

Re: Toledo Season Assessment
My thoughts from reading this:
It's funny to see the guy who is in charge of special teams lay a lot of the blame on special teams (without ever acknowledging, "And that's my department, so I'm partly responsible").
And this caught my eye:

And this caught my eye:
Really? And the quote above followed a statement about going bowling (as in 10 pins, not a 13th game). Obviously I'm no head coach, but that seems like a strange method to me."... [A]nything we do will involve competition. You win, you get rewarded. If you lose, you lift at 4:00 a.m.

Re: Toledo Season Assessment
Oh I think I liked this one the best...
"Is it safe to say you are not just tweaking things for next year, that you are looking for big improvements in all areas?"
"The difference between winning and losing is a play here or a play there so even just a little improvement can make the difference, especially in the MAC where all the teams are so close. We weren't far off from having six or seven wins and being bowl eligible this past year. That kind of success is well within our reach."
So, the answer to the question coach is: No, we will be hapy with a few tweaks here and there.
Crazy, it's like listening to Brandon all over again.

Re: Toledo Season Assessment
I know people 'round these parts like like Coach Ward a whole bunch.....but...if you look at our losses last year to powerhouses like EMU and Miami, you will note that we lost because we could not stop them when we HAD to in the 4th qtr. Compare that to the 4th qtr of this year's game with the Rockettes....when they HAD to stop us, we marched right down the field and put up two scores.
So far as facilities go...the Glass Bowl is so overrated. The home side is passable, but the chicken wire and aluminum construction on the visitor's side is about as ghetto as anything I've ever seen in college football. in 2000 or so the Doyt was a crumbling mess, but they've done a ton to spruce the pace up this decade...

Re: Toledo Season Assessment
Agree 100%. I think the Doyt suffers mostly because of its location. If it were positioned in the middle of campus with say the Library at the open end it would look so much more awesome. I think the greening up and landscaping of the parking lots, coupled with the behemoth Falcon statue and the Stroh Center will only make it look even better.Flipper wrote:I know people 'round these parts like like Coach Ward a whole bunch.....but...if you look at our losses last year to powerhouses like EMU and Miami, you will note that we lost because we could not stop them when we HAD to in the 4th qtr. Dead on, Flip. I'll take the Doyt any day of the week over the GB.Flipper wrote: So far as facilities go...the Glass Bowl is so overrated.
