I still have an original copy of this issue of SI....SOMEWHERE. It may take some serious digging, but I'm going to try to find it...it's in an envelpoe with the ticket stub and program from our NCAA tournament game at Minnesota.

I remember Tom Jeffire (Dino's was at the corner of Wooster & Thurstin) took a load of crap about the quote attributed to him about our building being a "dump". He swears he never said it.

That line of McPhee, Markell & Wells was the most exciting I've ever seen, their numbers are just ridiculous:

Markell 31-49-80

When you consider that Derek Whitmore and Darcy McConvey scored 103 and 102 points in their respective four year careers, (meaning NO disrespect to them, just giving a historical reference to players more of you 'younger' folks will remember) three guys scoring 80 or more points in the same single season is beyond comprehension.

That 78-79 team included NINE players who scored 100 or more points in their careers at BG, including Brian MacLellan, brothers Tom & Bruce Newton, Paul Titanic, Ken Morrow, Yves Pelland plus the line of McPhee, Wells & Markell.

37-6-2 (after starting the season with two OT losses to Michigan).
A 23 game unbeaten streak from Nov 10-Jan 27.
CCHA regular season AND tournament champions.
Outscored opponents 285-113.
CCHA Coach of the Year, Ron Mason
CCHA Player of the Year, Morrow
All CCHA 1st team: Morrow, Markell, Wells and Goalie Wally Charko (2.39gaa, .914 save%)
All CCHA 2nd team, McPhee (league's leading scorer is SECOND team?)...well, he was only a freshman.
All CCHA honorable mention: John Gibb, Peter Sikorski & MacLennan.

I had been a 'casual' fan before, but 78-79 was the season that got me hooked for life.

What entertained me most about home games in those years (up to '83 for me) was watching a rather imposing Mr MacLellan gliding into any corner where one of BG's players was about to get roughed up, and then watching the opposition evaporate back to their end in fear of life at the prospect of Brian "the enforcer" MacLellan possibly shaking his stick at them. Maclellan was so imposing I can't remember him actually having to get stuck into anyone. What a remarkable team.
