Word is that he is the top candidate to become the OC at the U of Minnesota...
I know he was fired at BGSU. How were his offenses? Play calling? etc
Thanks!
Any Gregg Brandon info?
Re: Any Gregg Brandon info?
He was generally loved as an OC when he was in that role here, running Urban Meyer's offense like crazy. For whatever reason, he didn't have anything sniffing success this year at Virginia, but that may have been a half-sunk ship.stpaulgoph wrote:Word is that he is the top candidate to become the OC at the U of Minnesota...

Re: Any Gregg Brandon info?
Virginia was a really bad situation. They were trying to put a spread in but they needed a rapid turnaround and it didn't materialize and they dropped the spread in favor of their previous offense mid-season. I think he's a good OC and will have success if he can implement his system with players who were recruited for it.
Re: Any Gregg Brandon info?
You'll be hard pressed to find anyone on this board who hated Gregg Brandon at HC more than I did. Despite winning a few games in the role, I never saw him as a good HC.
However, as an OC he was an unbridled success. He was only the OC here for 2 years under Urban, but we saw a very rapid turnaround to a spread offense that was immediately very prolific and very balanced. With him as an OC we consistently dominated on the ground and threw for a lot of yards. We had a great mix. For whatever reason that mix faded pretty dramatically when he became the HC, but I don't know if that was him or the guys that were his OCs.
I wouldn't really hold UVA against him. That was a terrible situation trying to overhaul an offense for a head coach that was on his way out the door barring a tremendous turnaround. I think you could do far worse than Gregg Brandon if you're hiring an OC.

If you land Brandon, you'll be happy quickly. What happened at UVa is very similar to Michigan in 08 - spread offense being used for people whose skills pointed to a pro-style offense. The guy knows how to load points onto the board quickly.

He is an offensive guru, no question. As a HC, he had a lot of success here early and then tapered off. He seems best suited for the role of OC...he can put together a wickedly cool offense.

I think even GB himself would have to admit his last season here was a dissappointment. I think he's got a great mind for offensive football and he's a pretty effective recruiter. I think he had most of his success with the spread here when he had a QB like Josh Harris or the 2004 version of Omar Jacobs....a guy who can throw the ball and run as well.....MarQueis Gray could be that QB at Minnesota.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

Detroit Lions QB coach Jeff Horton lands the OC job at Minnesota.
