It's sad thought that I should come to expect this out of a random player that comes here to play for BG. It really is. Stuff like this should be extremely rare and probably was back in yesteryear but today there are some many things to tempt a kid it's almost impossible to field a roster of clean as the wind driven show types. I guess maybe I was hoping that Orr would be way better at finding quality kids who wouldn't do these kinds of things than Dakich but I guess not even he can know much more about a player either.h2oville rocket wrote:Falconboy wrote:Oh my goodness. Never- it was going on when I was in school and you'll be asking that question of your grandchildren.

This stuff has happened for decades. You just never heard about it before.Falconboy wrote:It's sad thought that I should come to expect this out of a random player that comes here to play for BG. Yes. I was in a position to know at UT and knew a number of BG athletes when I was in school as well. Can't begin to tell you how often people were smoking reefer (sometimes under the stands before their event at track meets), getting busted for assault, vandalizing property etc. No moreso than the general population but Hammb is right- I don't remember hearing anybody getting suspended- it was sort of a boys will be boys atmosphere.hammb wrote:This stuff has happened for decades. No one would wake up the next day and see their name plastered all over the world on someone's blog. Coaches didn't know or kept things in house. Believe me- I know a lot of guys from both schools who would be in the same boat. Thsi isn't new and its not going away soon.
Not ME of course. Other guys. Not me. No.

Yeah...right...isn't that you on the left?

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

If both Calhoun and McCelroy never play at BG again who exactly will be playing C and PF?

Re: McElroy Suspended Indefinetely
If this is the only pot-related suspension, BG will be behind other teams in the conference this season.
Dumb thing to do, but it's hard to think of something less harmless to do that will break a rule.

Really? Because I thought of three or four just in the time it took me to reflect on how ignorant that statement was.jscottfitzwater wrote:but it's hard to think of something less harmless to do that will break a rule.

+1 -- let's not start a 'legalize pot' thread. That belongs in some other forum.TG1996 wrote:Really? Re: McElroy Suspended Indefinetely
1) Peeing on a building - Guys have been doing that since they learned to hold it, but every once in awhile a cop gets it up to bust someone for it. (Though in fairness, it usually comes with a public intox, which is "not" in the less harmless category.)BleedOrange wrote:Okay. Name them.TG1996 wrote:Really? 2) Skipping class - Not habitually, but I'd rather have a kid blow off a class and get caught/busted/punished than make the conscious decision to not only smoke weed, but have it on your person in some quantity.
3) I'd even put the one-off off-campus fight close to the "less harmless" group. Again, all about conscious decisions. Guys, and especially college-aged guys, are lunkheads. It takes a lot less time to think about hitting some guy that "dissed" you or is groping your girlfriend than it does to think about obtaining weed and making sure you have it with you when you go out for the night.
Maybe I mis-interpreted the original definition of "less harmless", but in my opinion, it's not as cut and dry as "it's just a little weed, move on". Without getting into the "legalize" discussion, I know that pot isn't necessarily the devil that everyone thinks it is, but it's still illegal and should be a no-brainer for a college athlete to stay away from, being at or near the top of the "absolutely do not do this" list when they sign a scholarship.

Just weighing in … IMO no matter how you look at this, it is BAD publicity for the program.
Hopefully McElroy gets his s—t together. This was a very poor move on his part. He should know better. Not to excuse smoking weed, but the fact that this occurred during the season is even more disturbing. I don't like the direction this kid is heading.

Could be Orr's fault, really. Picture this scenario: "C'mon McElroy-you've got to get more rebounds if you wanna see the floor. You box out OK but you're not getting high enough!"
"Uh, OK, Coach, I'll work on that."
