Tournament Attendance

Post by AyZiggy97 »

It looked from my seat location that BG had about 2 fans for every 1 for Toledo at the championship game. I've been critical of our fans frequently over a myriad of reasons, but the turnout in Cleveland this weekend was very impressive. On Saturday, it looked like everyone on the side of the court opposite the benches was wearing orange and brown. The fans cheered supportively when the team needed a pick me up and zealously booed the referees who let the game in the paint become Greco-Roman wrestling. Now, it'd be nice to get an early round site of Cincinnati, South Bend, Louisville, or Pittsburgh in the NCAAs to continue the strong fan showing!

Does anybody know what the total attendance was at yesterday's championship game? By chance did it beat the mark set last month at Toledo?

We are only about 9,000 short for the tournament attendance record.

12,879..Kent State vs. Toledo (Gund Arena), 1/29/00

I even remember this game

This proves again that this women's tournament should be moved to the Lucas Co. Arena in Toledo. Yesterdays game would have drew 7,000-8,000 easy!

I call BS on that. We draw better for tournament games in Cleveland than we do in our HOME games at Anderson Arena. I think it's because we have a bigger amount of BG fans living in northeast Ohio than we do in northwest Ohio, as hard as that might be to believe. Just look at the proportion of azz.com users that come from Lorain County eastward.

Maybe the game would've drawn 6000 again, but it would've been mostly Toledo fans attributing for that increase. I'd even make the case that if this game were played in Toledo we might have lost just because of the greater fan support Toledo would've had. It was a 50/50 game with 1:30 left.

I hate to be the bearer of Bad News, But the MAC Women's Tournament Attendance record Belongs to Toledo and Kent State. The Game was the 2001 MAC Women's Tournament Final with an attendance of 4872. This information is provided by the MAC-Sports Web page under Women's Records. The All Time single game attendance for a MAC game is the Game played in JAN. 29, 2000 Kent vs. Toledo. with 12879 also per the MAC web site

My only point was that it felt like a BG crowd advantage. I was proud that we turned out a lot more fans than Toledo. And the fans weren't just there in numbers, but they were into the game as well.

I call BS on your call of BS. Total attendance for our games at the Mac tourney this year was 7665. Total attendance for our last 3 major games at home was 7681 (Eastern Michigan this year and the 2 WNIT games last year). I would guess that 65-70% of the tourney fans were ours, 5000-5400. Likewise 85-90% of the home game fans were ours, 6500-6900. It wouldn't shock me if Toledo fans outnumbered us at the new downtown arena but to think that they would outnumber us by enough that their cheering would intimidate our ladies is an insult to both our fans and our players,

The UT-BG game at UT drew close to 6K because the students got in free and they were there. The MAC tourney was held when UT was on Spring break. How many UT students would have attended the game in the LCA when they weren't there, especially since the tickets would cost them money and they couldn't stay in the dorms?

I liked Detroit, I hated Savage Hall and Seagate Center, Columbus was horrible because it made no sense, and Cleveland is a fun city and arena. Maybe before we jump to the LCA, we ought to schedule a couple of games there to see what it's like. That and see what the city is going to do financially in the future. Holding a tourney in a ghost town isn't very smart.

Let's see. . . . .

The NCAA is ADDING "The Q" to their Mens' playoff venue
and
we're taking about moving the Women playoffs out - to toleldo oh.

A NBA arena
Larger City
More media coverage
More hotels, restaurants, etc
NCAA adding the Men's Tournament
Home of the Conference
ability to see Men's MAC teams, too
Neutral site
close to the Biggest fan in the MAC! (starts with an F and ends with K BUT - has 5 letters in his name!)

doesn't make sense to me,
and I bet people will be complaining (if moved) within a couple of years!

I'll take Cleveland !!

That's all well and good, but I'm not sure Cleveland and the Q feel the same way. That's the reason the women's tournament will be moved.

Why do you think Cleveland doesn't want the women's tournament? I can see that the management of the Q might not want the facility tied up for the length of time necessary to run both tournaments, but I don't get the rationale for Cleveland wanting to lose the business of 3-4000 fans for 3 days of games.

MAC women's coaches have repeatedly said that they don't want to share the site with the men's tournament. The tourney will move, the only question is where.
