I was back in BG yesterday afternoon and there was a bunch of ice, some white, some a blackish color, and some orange colored ice in the northeast side of the parking lot closest to the old tennis courts. If you ask me it appears they removed the ice from the arena. I am guessing they did this to work on the compressors under the ice. Although we have not heard any word or seen any other progess I believe they started on the renovations.

The ice is removed yearly for routine maintenance. That doesn't mean that they haven't started, just that it's not really a sign that they have.

Well when are they going to start? We need to know. We deserve to know! Have they even swept the bathrooms yet this spring?

I'm willing to bet some of those bathrooms haven't been cleaned since Coach York was here.

Why bother cleaning them? They just came through and painted over everything a few years ago!

I was in town for some BG baseball last weekend for the NIU series, and one of the things I noticed that was a cosmetic improvement outside of the ice arena they finally replanted some of the trees they cut down in the parking lot islands (they removed them all) at the arena and also along the stadium road. I don’t know if this had anything to do with the renovation project or not (probably not), but once these trees start to grow, it should help clean up the appearance of the arena area as in recent years after the trees were all removed and some of the landscaping and overhead walkway covers were removed as well, the place really started looking very drab sitting there all but itself. It maybe wouldn’t hurt to have the rust streaks (or whatever they are) power washed off the side of the building either.

I believe the trees were removed due to "Emarald Ash Borer" infection and they had to take out a LOT of them across the campus. I also am pretty sure outside of the building is supposed to cleaned up as well.

That proves it, Dr. Cartwright hates trees and wants to eliminate them from BGSU.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

I do believe that it was a state mandate. The emerald ash borer kills the trees. Cutting them down is the only way to keep them from spreading.

Ya, a shame about the ash trees. Cutting hasn't prevented the spread ... they'll die either way.

Speaking of those tennis courts behind the arena, they have really gone down hill in recent years too. Looks like a bankrupt country club out back. I had a chat with a lady a few weeks ago who took her daughter to BG for a campus visit. "I told her there's no way you're going there," she said, " .... everything is so worn." Don't believe she even saw the Ice Arena, but that was an indictment against the maintenance program of the entire campus.

Not saying things don't need cleaned up, but if "landscaping" is among this lady's criteria for selecting a college for her daughter....

Aren't the old tennis courts part of some future Ice Arena plan anyway? While they look awfully rough, the new ones across the street are pretty sharp on their own (much larger) merits.

As much as it pains me to admit, TG is right. Those haven't been used for competitve tennis in years and are slated to be torn out at some point in the future. There are nice courts across the street and over near Offenhauer.

Not sure what she meant by "worn" though especially with so much new construction on campus.
