Unbelievable...."sick" is the correct term.

Geez, I hope my perspective never gets so warped that I view 15-20 kids allegedly engaging in a drunken brawl that injures three people as a "sign of team unity".

Keg Party Brawl Investigation

Toledo Police say charges could be filed by the end of the week against one or more members of the UT Rockets football team, as the result of a fight that occured during a party at an off-campus apartment on Alvin St. on Sunday. Police say 10 or more team members were in the vicinity of the party, and as many as 5 were involved in the scuffle. At this point police are not releasing the names of any of the suspects. Head Coach Tom Amstutz says he's waiting for the results of the police investigation before taking any disciplinary measures.

I didn't know that the Toledo Police department was coaching the UT football team. Shouldn't coach Numnutz be a little more proactive and take a look at this matter himself? I know it may cut into his Krispy Kreme time, but sacrifices must be made when duty calls...

How about a leader standing up and saying, "hey, beating the crap out of a bunch of people won't accomplish anything, let's forget it and go do something else."

That would be the logical thing to do. I'm certain the guys weren't drinking water that night. And when you have an opponent at your football party and he's causing trouble good things can't come out of it. This is a big mess that I'm glad the Falcons aren't involved in.

Blade story with interview with Amstutz

Post by Warthog »

Amstutz is going to wait until the police finalize their investigation before doing anything. Is he hoping that happens the week before they play Buffalo or Eastern, some patsie where he can suspend a bunch of guys and still win the game? Another thing he says is that it is like 105 "sons" out there. Don't know about the rest of you, but if I got in a fight or screwed up something like this, my dad wouldn't tell me, "son, I don't know what happen so I am just gonna wait and see what the police say". He'd kicked my butt, ask me what the HECK I was doing/thinking. Punish me immediately, not wait to hear what somebody else was gonna say. More or less do his own investigation, if you know what I mean!.

I hear ya Warthog...

This is a touchy situation for UT. I'm sure Amstutz were to do anything before the police finished their investigation, it could hamper what they're trying to do. In fact, I'm guessing they may have ASKED him to hold off. No matter how it's handled, it's ugly and pretty easy to second-guess. I just hope the kids who did it (players or not) are taught a lesson and those who got hurt are ok.

Glad it's not happening here.

Speak on warthog...And in my family, when dad was done, mom would start in... :) Hell! They probably would have invited the police in to take me to jail!

On the other hand, until the police file their report on who is involved and to what extent, you really can't blame him for waiting. I do hope that if this week they release who was involved, that Amstutz and his staff will bench or kick-off the team who ever was involved in this debacle, EVEN if it involves marquee players. It's the right thing to do! If Manger or Pope was involved in something like this, I hope Brandon would boot 'em and not think twice about it!

In my house, jail would have been preferred over taking the punishment Mom and Dad were going to dole out!

I second that! It's mainly why I live in BG instead of commuting 30 minutes back and forth :D

Maybe ol' Luther Pruett realized he was a bit short at DE for that opener...

its one thing to "hold off until you hear the police report" *BEFORE* suspending someone, but to use your judgement to suspend a player, then go back on it because "it might not be that bad" is just silly.

They're in the preseason top 25, did you actually think they would lay down a strict punishment and risk losing? Sadly this is not how Toledo or a number of other schools work.

I too would like to believe that if BG players did something like this that Coach Brandon would lay down the hammer. But again, I'm glad BG isn't involved with this crap.

Final Disposition of the Case

Ex-UT athlete gets jail term

A former University of Toledo football player who punched and pushed another student into a window during a brawl at an off-campus house party was sentenced yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court to two years in prison.

Joseph J. Kay, 22, of Temperance, a former UT defensive lineman, on April 25 pleaded no contest to inciting violence and was found guilty for his role in the fight in which Mark Heck, a UT senior, was pushed into a window.

Mr. Heck, who was in the courtroom for the sentencing, underwent surgery at a local hospital, and may have suffered permanent nerve damage in his hand.

Judge Denise Ann Dartt said Kay's actions in threatening the victim and then returning to the party with intoxicated friends to participate in a melee was calculated and premeditated.

Judge Dartt said Kay had the opportunity to leave the home at 2155 Alvin St. on Aug. 22 and not return. "But instead you found 10 friends or acquaintances and came back," she said.

Judge Dartt said she believed the defendant had issues with alcohol and controlling his anger. "I hope and pray that you can pull yourself together," she said.

Judge Dartt said she would consider the possibility of releasing Kay from prison on judicial release if his conduct in prison merits it.

Kay was removed from the team after the incident.

Terrance Partee, 21, another UT football member, also was charged in the incident, but he was found not guilty of misdemeanor assault after a bench trial in Toledo Municipal Court.
