Ask any EMU fans how that strategy is working out with Ron English. Or any Syracuse fans how that worked out with Greg Robinson.Drago wrote:The new hockey coach is the perfect example of why universities run out of money. I'm of the opinion that income is either money given or earned. Most non-profits operate off donations. Universities are 501(c) non-profits. Donations=income that same way a sold ticket equals income. Christopher has made a lot of money for BG.MarkL wrote:Those are donations. GC has been famous for rallying alums in funding drives dating back to his days at Purdue. The athletic budget I was referring to is what is allocated by the university. Smallest in the conference. The other two that offer hockey - Miami and WMU - are near the top. So GC has been doing a lot with a little.BGorDeath wrote:I'm kind of confused by the "income" comments. GC raised money for a new arena and the refurbishment of another. The money came from somewhere...

I think we've strayed from the original point of this thread...Greg Christopher would be a great fit at NC State...a MUCH better fit then here at Bowling Green. The man was MADE for the state of North Carolina.

It doesn't really matter who you want to bring in since every candidate would know what the going rate was for a head guy.Drago wrote:The new hockey coach is the perfect example of why universities run out of money. Bergeron's hiring was symbolic if nothing else.
I see NCST going with someone who is from a better basketball school.

Hmmm....How about a couple guys named Beamer and Tressel? IF a guy can coach, he can coach no matter what level.Drago wrote: IAA track record means nothing in my opinion.

My point is that you still have to prove yourself at the Division I level. Tressel and Beemer have obviously proven themselves, we have to wait to see if Clausen does the same thing. Fans too often blindly support coaches at the beginning of a tenure, then totally throw them under the bus after a couple of seasons when things don't go well. Time is the key before evaluating coaching hires. Any hire is going generate short term excitment for a fanbase, but eventually time will reveal how good the hire was.

I don't really care too much about how Clausen does. It's Clawson I'm more concerned with.Drago wrote:My point is that you still have to prove yourself at the Division I level. Bear in mind that a portion of Bergeron's salary is coming from the endowment fund that has been set up to support the program. That fund is money that has been donated to the program by former players and fans for the express purpose of offsetting the costs of funding the program. Meaning coach's salaries, recruiting, equipment, etc., etc. There is no reason, in my mind, why funds such as this can't be set up for the other programs.Drago wrote:The new hockey coach is the perfect example of why universities run out of money. +1 The problem here at BG is this should have been done 40 years ago when the endowment could have been grown in better economic times. We are now stuck behind the eight ball. Hopefully we can get that corrected shortly. Don't get me wrong, we need to keep our facilities up to date, but in my biased opinion endowing as much of our operating costs as possible should the the TOP priority.BGFan wrote:Bear in mind that a portion of Bergeron's salary is coming from the endowment fund that has been set up to support the program. This is the way to sustain each team, indefinitely!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Good work everyone! Now, let's just make sure we do the same when Clawson's name comes up for a coaching gig.
