According to the friends we have in the alumni association, there were about 500 people who attended the weekend. It was really a good time. The vow renewal was really, really well done. There were about 40 couples, ranging from 3 years married to 61. They had bouquets and bouteneres (sp?) for the couples, and the ceremony was held in Prout Chapel. It was officiated by Mayor Quinn and he was good. Afterwards, they bussed us to University House (the president's house) for a wine and dessert reception. President Cartwright and her husband hosted and it was really nice with a champaign toast and entertainment. I was really nervous with my kids (3 and 7) there but everyone was really welcoming about it. As I said, it was really well done. Well worth the cost and a nice chance to meet other Falcon Flames. Oh, we also got a set of Centennial wine glasses, which was neat.

Some great info in this post! I wish I would have been aware of this, I would love to have attended. I will be following up with some questions when I have a little more time to ask.

Seems like all they can think of is how to tear more buildings down. Maybe it is cheaper, but still sad. Some halls I can see going, they amounted to little more than stop-gap buildings. But then to keep hearing about that wreck that is south hall being saved, out of fear of traffic noise, but then talk about taking down Founders and Admin?

The whole "connect with the city" thing just doesn't seem to have real purpose to me, unless they plan on buying all the homes leading into downtown.

I know they had a surprising number along Wooster, and had some in places west of campus. They tore some down recently. I'm curious if they plan to effectively absorb from campus to downtown over time.

According to Bob Waddle, the architects and various builders tell us that South Hall is a very structurally sound building. They can do to the inside of the building whatever they want to do.

"Someone" told me that the number of homes the University owns on Wooster Street (between Manville and Quarters) is amazing.

I wouldn't mind them renovating South Hall, but lord that is a "fugly" building. If the bones are solid and they can meaningfully gut the structure, maybe dress it up some, that isn't a bad deal. It needs a Wooster facing entrance I think. Maybe even some kind of open corridor through to the inner quad.

Much as I wish they wouldn't nuke the grand, tall buildings like Admin, from what I understand the thing is a dump. There would at least be that historic aspect to having the original views restored.

Taking down West Hall and the consumer Ed hall makes sense. It would open the views from Founders to the rest of the area. But losing Founders Quad just doesn't make sense. Even if it is 20 years down the road.

The impression I have from looking at how the campus has evolved over time is - aside from most of the original heart of campus - it seems many of the buildings were just stuck in places and not much though was given to the actual design of many of them in terms of a collegiate appearance. I feel this is one the areas that has hurt BG when compared to many other campuses out there, including some right here in Ohio. Many campuses have a flow, a theme or a feel to them and BG in my opinion lacks that for the most part. It seems like now, finally, we are trying to improve not only the actual facilities, but the looks, functions and placements of them. It just seems a shame that more of that wasn’t done on the front end. I always wanted to ask those in charge of the design and placement of some our building and ask they why that designs and why right there.

I do like some of the new additions to the university that are being worked on currently now. I really hope they help the university in several ways. Personally, I just wish as BG grew, that it would have grown with the look of the University Hall quad and those building designs as well as the landscaping and trees, as opposed to the sort of random sprawl across most of the rest of the bare campus.

This project at BG is in some ways reminding me what the University of Akron has done in recent years. I took classes there briefly out of high school before enrolling at BG. At the time, Akron was a dump. Now while I am not a fan of urban campus settings, I will say that stepping foot on campus there now, it is a much better and better looking campus than just over a decade ago. New buildings, lots of landscaping, removal of roads to close in the campus, they did a very nice job compared to what they had there before. Now I always liked BG more than Akron, but I can only hope that we make the same type of improvements and then some. I am excited to see how things progress.

Any more information released on when the new Business school might get built?

In the most recent BGSU magazine I received about a week ago, it said a new College of Business Administration building would be placed at the South edge of the Library Commons. This may sounds like a stupid question, but is the "Library Commons" a different building or part of Jerone Library? I'm really not sure. But what is directly South of Jerome Library is the oval with the greek houses. Does anyone else know if this is where it's supposed to go?

Also, there was an artist rendering of part of campus showing showing some future plans. Things I liked were a lot more green spaces where exisiting inner-campus surface lots are currently on campus. It had green spaces shown where there are parking lots behind University Hall and where the road by the greek houses on Wast campus and the science area meet. I loved seeing that! It also shows the Education Building and the Administration Building as being gone with green spaces there, so the green space will open up and flow from the new McDonald dining center all the way through the space in front of the Union and over into the quad with the clock tower. I loved seeing that too! It also shows a new building going in the surface lot just West of East Hall near the old school house and the Commons building was gone.
