Penn State D1 Hockey
How will this impact Falcon Hockey in the CCHA? Much to discuss....that has been discussed many times before...a big ten league???

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

If a Big 10 hockey conference was formed it'd be bad.
Very, very bad.

That's just a blog from someone that doesn't know a whole lot about college hockey.Falcon Fanatic wrote:How will this impact Falcon Hockey in the CCHA? Much to discuss....that has been discussed many times before...a big ten league???

There most likely won't be a Big Ten Hockey Conference with the current structure of college hockey (unlike football basketball and many other sports).
Although I do think the Big 10 might crown a hockey champion much like the ECAC does.
Rumors of Penn State joining the NCAA for hockey has been around since their DI club team has dominated in the early-mid 90s. Usually the team also plays DIII teams as well.
Here's a more credible article that came out earlier this week:
http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/conte ... ml?nav=751
I saw this article the other day and suspected that Penn State women's hockey would most likely join the CHA and men's hockey would become the 12th team in the CCHA. Instant rivalries with Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. And it seems if PSU does join that may be true:

Re: Penn State D1 Hockey
That's what I think the point of the article is about. If PSU joins D1 it will break the current structure of college hockey. I don't think the Big Ten cares if it kills off smaller schools.sbkbghockey wrote: There most likely won't be a Big Ten Hockey Conference with the current structure of college hockey (unlike football basketball and many other sports).
There is a lot of speculation in the article but it does look like they quoted information from the altoonamirror.com story that you were referencing as well as other articles. If PSU joins D1 hockey I hope they join the CCHA but I think there will eventually be a Big Ten conference.

Re: Penn State D1 Hockey
I told you months ago that Penn State would be a DIV 1 hockey program and in doing so the Big 10 would form its own hockey conference and you all just laughed. My brother-in-law works at PSU within the athletic department and this is what I know. There plan is to have PSU a Div 1 member by 2012. And then by 2014 they want the Big 10 to form its own hockey conference. This essentially will tear apart the CCHA. By the Big 10 creating a new hockey conference they are then hoping to persuade Notre Dame to join the Big 10 in football.
The new Big 10 conference would be:
Michigan
Michigan State
Notre Dame
Penn State
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Ohio State
CCHA Conference would be?
BG
Miami
Western Michigan
Ferris State
Lake Superior
Alaska Fairbanks
Pretty weak league and not sure if it would last

Re: Penn State D1 Hockey
It can be looked at two ways. If the Big Ten starts it own conference, and the CCHA leftovers + Huntsville still get an automatic bid, then it is a good thing. We are never going to win anything with Michigan, MSU, ND, and OSU in our league. At least with a those other teams we would have an opportunity to get hot in the tournament and knock off Miami. What it would kill, is attendance. Those Big Ten Schools are really the only ones we draw decent with.
The CCHA leftovers would have a chance to be like the ECAC. Which is a decent conference that doesn't really have any powerhouses with the exception of a consistently good Cornell team. I actually hope the Big Ten forms it's own conference. We can't compete otherwise.

Re: Penn State D1 Hockey
The Big ten is wealthy and powerful and if they so decieed to create a Big ten hockey conference they will...when you look at the big ten and the football expansion that has happend and the speculated expansions, the creation would destroy the CCHA.
Lets just count on ND going to the big ten hockey conference,
The Big ten Hockey conference make up:
1. Ohio State
2. Mich
3. Mich State
4. Wi
5. Minnesota
6. PENNSTATE
7. Notre Dame
So now your at 7
I doubt that Nebraska will add a team, Indiana has a ACHA team but I doubt they will up that program, Ill I have no clue but I doubt it. Iowa..nope, purdue i doubt it as well as nw.
So to make a viable big ten hockey conference you need at least 10 teams. who do they go for...
I doubt they would pursue either Alaska team. They could pursue BAsket ball partner Boston College but I Can not see them making any moves...the likely canidates are Miami ohio, minesota state, and possibly BG.
What happens next is the problem you would have teams from the reminants of the CCHA move to the WCHA, and the CCHA ends up in a death spiral.
Which leads me to believe that a rumor I heard in relation to this could have some weight, that being the CCHA has been in talks with Pen and that pen will likely join the CCHA and that added trouble with huntsvill. I will just assume that the future look of the CCHA is
1.Miami
2.Mi
3 Mi State
4 BGSU
5 OSU
6 LAke state
7 Ferris STate
8 Alaska
9 Northern MI
10 Notre Dame
11 western MI
12 A H
13 PEnn State
Further I can see a big ten tourney each year with WI, Minney and two CCHA big ten teams taking hold
I am also looking forward to the day(s) when we start hosting a tournament!
in the end I am not too worried about penn, and a big ten hockey conference, I think it will happen in time, just not that quickly.
as far some thinking BGSU will never win anything with big ten schools in the CCHA your full of crap and cant see the past or the future. Hockey is not like Bball or Football, they are not outspending or out ahead of us with history. I admit its an uphill battle to get back to our position of CCHA dominace, but its not a dream out of reach either. Its not beyond seeing BG in the CCHA mix in 3 years, and on the National hunt again in 5.

MACMAN, keep on dreaming...unrealistic expections all the way around. I'm a huge BG hockey fan, have been since the mid eighties, but we are in a league with too many good programs. You can't just keep firing coaches and expect the new guy to be the savior. I'll still go to games and support the team, but I'm not expecting CCHA titles. Miami is the exception, not the rule with mid major programs. They have an elite coach and a brand new rink, not a rink with new lights.

Re: Penn State D1 Hockey
Except unlike sports like football and basketball, smaller schools can and do compete with the big boys. Just look at the last CCHA Tounament- Semi finals were Miami(2) vs Michigan(5) and Ferris(4) vs. Northern Mich.(5) in OT. The CCHA Championship game was a close, highly competitive, one goal game Michigan (2) vs. Northern Michigan (1). The third place game was as well Miami (2) vs. Ferris State (1).Drago wrote:MACMAN, keep on dreaming...unrealistic expections all the way around. Your comment about "not expecting CCHA titles" would never cut it if you were a player on Bergeron's team. I expect CCHA titles and sooner rather than later!!

I'm sure if you look, you will see that in the past 10-15 years, the powerhouse schools have not been our major downfall. The schools we've struggled against has been the teams we were expected to beat. We can and will be a major factor on the national scene again. As the endowment grows, so will our success.Drago wrote:MACMAN, keep on dreaming...unrealistic expections all the way around. Very true. Before when much of the current BGSU students were born the Falcons were feared as much as Miami, Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame today.pdt1081 wrote:I'm sure if you look, you will see that in the past 10-15 years, the powerhouse schools have not been our major downfall. But, if they put in a 4000+ seat arena, then it will be significantly smaller than Value $h!tty Arena, and therefore not the tomb that the schmucks play in.
