Temple finally gets into the changing college football landscaping business.
By Mike Gibson
It's one thing when an anonymous blogger throws out a rumor. Those kind of things happen all the time.
It's another when a respected college football journalist like Rivals.com's Tom Dienhart does it, followed a few hours later by an assistant AD at Rice adding the "exciting news" coming later today that Temple and one other school will join Conference USA for football only, effective starting in the 2011 season. Dienhart has broken many stories and his reputation is impeccable in the business, so his word is nothing to be trifled with and when the Rice AD says "exciting news" coming today that's as close to a two-source confirmation that you'll get in today's increasingly electronic media.
When Owlscoop.com editor John DiCarlo asked Bill Bradshaw for a comment regarding the proposed move, Bradshaw said he couldn't comment.
If nothing was happening, don't you think Bill Bradshaw would have said nothing was happening?
Something is happening.
So I'm buying it.
Temple to CUSA. Since this has to be approved by the Board of Trustees, the time frame could be a little longer than expected.
It will be released not by Temple first but by the CUSA office. Only after it is made official will Temple have some kind of comment.

If true, I hope the MAC has a significant "buyout" provision for these guys...I honestly think they used the MAC...now that they're "respectable", bye bye? Frankly, I won't be sad to see them go.

Haven't we seen this before? Are you surprised that Temple is using the MAC as a way to rebuild and then bolting? I'm not. If they really wanted to be in the MAC, they would have joined in all sports, not just football. It was a way to bring their program back.Class of 61 wrote:If true, I hope the MAC has a significant "buyout" provision for these guys...I honestly think they used the MAC...now that they're "respectable", bye bye? I beleive their contract ends after this year so there would be no buyout.

Re: TEMPLE TO CUSA RUMOR
They served a purpose- an easy win on the schedule, a chance to give your starters a break from playing too many minutes and a way to give your offense its confidence back after a bad game. At most I see two good years in the MAC and off to a lateral league with greater travel costs and not much more exposure.
I don't recall anyone ever using the MAC as a place to rebuild- CFU and MArshall were programs on the rise when they joined, although that was arguable for CFU given their tenure in the MAC- they did turn it around much faster than Temple did.

Wouldn't surprise me if it happened...maybe we should lay another 70 on them this year as a parting gift?

Making a lateral move to a conference with greater travel costs in an era of tightly constrained state and university budgets? Stupid and irresponsible...

I don't really recall UCF having great years in the MAC. I remember their coach running his mouth about how great they would be, but their impact came once they left the MAC.h2oville rocket wrote:They served a purpose- an easy win on the schedule, a chance to give your starters a break from playing too many minutes and a way to give your offense its confidence back after a bad game. Balanced divisional schedules, and no messy tie-breaker scenarios is fine by me.

Re: TEMPLE TO CUSA RUMOR
I just think its rather funny how they have one good season and now there cool with leaving to a bigger conference. Besides last year they were horrible and you know its not going to be any different this time around. They will go somewhere else, stink up the place and then either go independent again or go to the sun belt lol cause I know the MAC wont invite them back. I would like to see the MAC go to the way it was before them anyway. Temples atmosphere and stadium are way out of place here anyway. You go from playing at a 20-30,000+ seat capacity stadium to the Philidelphia Eagles stadium which never is close to being packed ever. I say good ridence and bon voyuge to the Owls!

Re: TEMPLE TO CUSA RUMOR
They can't get out of the MAC soon enough as I see it. They have been a massive waste of time and money since day one. Their program stinks now, it will continue to stink in the future, and they never, ever, fit this league. I don't know what massive stroke the MAC leadership had, that made having their membership in the league seem to be a good idea. I don't know why some folks indulged in the pipe-dream of Temple playing all-sports within the MAC or that such would have been a good idea.
The MAC needs to focus on pulling its collective act together, make itself valued from within, before it can go off trying to impress the world. In football and basketball alike, the league hasn't had a lot of credibility building seasons of late. There is good football, some modestly good basketball on the men's side, but not nearly enough.

I think I speak for the majority when I say..."Na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, Goodbye!" and may I add, good riddance.

They seem to be getting ahead of themselves. A single winning season and they think they've arrived?
As has been noted, things haven't exactly gone swimmingly for their fellow C-USA bolters. Marshall has never been the same and most people think of cage fighting when someone mentions UCF.

Exactly- they weren't rebuilding. They were building.
