Don't Be Depressed

Post by Rollo83 »

I no it hurts, but I saw a lot of positives tonight. Young, inexperienced team goes on the road and holds its own...in fact had a chance to win but couldn't close the deal. Troy caught the last break/turnover and our guy misses a 36-yaredr and their guy makes a 36-yarder.

I am excited by this offense and the QB play tonight. We will be loving Schlitz before he's done here. Clawson showed me he knows what he's doing starting this kid.

On the flip side, same old defense. Can't tackle to save their lives. I shutter to think what the Michigan QB will do to us. But I think we can play with anyone in the MAC.

I agree, Rollo. It sucks to lose a game we could have won but the team will grow from this. As long as we're jellin' by the time Buffalo rolls into town on Oct 2nd, we'll be in the hunt. Schilz did a solid job tonight. But for the love of Doyt Perry, PLEASE work on tackling......again.

Paging Dr. Freud... :drinkers:

But yeah, I think MAC fans are going to hate that kid in a couple years.

From the pre-game notes:
The Falcons enter 2010 with 44 of their 85 scholarship players being either true or redshirt freshmen. Combine that with five players that played as true freshmen last year, the Falcons have a total of 49 players (57.6 percent) that have one year or less in playing experience.

This VERY, VERY young team has a LOT of potential and I'm sure that we will be pretty thrilled with the progress that we make this year!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Tackling must improve and I'm sure Coach will address that. No need to be depressed, the loss was tough but the kids played very hard against a good team, who largely faced the same holes BG did. Schilz had a good game, made good decisions and he gets the ball out quick. Geter will have a solid season if he gets his touches. Had they lost this game 42-0, I would have been worried, but I think the results tonight are probably the best we could have expected in a loss.

This is a classic case of "if only".... Could have won the game if we didn't have the turnover, or the missed field goal or maybe still won if we didn't have the helmet to helmet penalty....... Ay caramba! Let's hope some things get shored up for the Tulsa game. There was plenty to like, but still things to be concerned about. But we are most certainly better than the 2 win total that SI has us predicted for!

I liked what I saw (tackling aside, can we still blame Beckman for that???). Schilz looked light years ahead of Sheehan when he saw his first action. I think he is going to be a special one for us.

I think we are going to grow and learn and tweak each week to become a good, solid team. I don't care if we go 1-3 in OOC, I WANT THAT M.A.C. title. Also, the 1 win OOC to be Marshall since I'm driving 12 hours each way to see the game. :-)

Our last two drives were killers as with the score tied at 27-27 as we missed a short FG getting into the redzone followed by the interception at the Troy 34 with just over a minute to go. Add to it the personal foul on their last drive and it made that field goal attempt much easier.

Damn....last season ended with a heartbreaker and this one begins with one. At least it wasn't a MAC game and there were some nice signs in it. But we really let another one get away from here.

Just made it home from Troy. Haven't opened any other threads and probably don't want to. Aside from the obvious it was an excellent and fun game to attend. Four or five ties, a couple leads changes, and the fourth quarter was edge of your seat.

Don't know where to begin, haven't seen any stats. Number 3 from Troy is an absolute stud. Best player on the field and it wasn't even close. I'm guessing here but I would say 75% or more of his all purpose yards came after someone had an arm around him. On his long TD run every BG player had a chance to tackle him... and failed miserably.

Really encouraged by our young quarterback. Excellent poise and he physically looks like a guy you want running your offense. I know his stats could not have been that great with all the incompletions but there were a lot of passes in the first half that should have been caught. He throws a nice ball. Would have liked to see him take off and run a few more times. The first downs were there if we would have.

Geter looked good. I think we are a little too predictable though when the QB goes under center. Receivers dropped too many passes. Most of them were not easy catches but a lot of them should have been made.

I don't think I have ever seen a better night from BG in terms of kickoff and punt returns. All of them had chances to go the distance.

I am sure it has been said a hundred times already so I will say it one more time, the tackling sucked.

Me and all of the people around me thought it was a bad idea to kick the FG on 4th and a foot in the fourth quarter. We turned out to be right. I hated that call. Nobody had a good feeling about kicking there.

Tons of penalties on both sides. I think we got screwed a little bit on a couple personal fouls in the fourth quarter. The first when our player was hit out of bounds by 2 different Troy players. It was the blatant and obvious. No flag. The other was the hit on their QB. I could clearly be wrong on this because my vantage point was not the best and I never got to see a replay of it but from what I saw I thought that call was super weak at that point of the game. I assume they threw the flag for a shot to the head? Might not have even mattered but kicking a 42 yard FG is a lot tougher than 32.

Troy seemed better conditioned than us. We couldn't have asked for a better day to play in Alabama in early September. Temps were in the 80s and low humidity. Yet we still had someone go down for cramps about every 5 plays in the second half. Don't think Troy had one. It showed in the second and fourth quarters. Those 2 quarters is where we lost the game. Between not being able to get them off the field and not tackling. Can we really expect the tackling to get better? I honestly don't. At least not much

Props to Troy, they made more plays than us. They got down early but got right back in it. Happy that I was able to make it, unfortunately I work with a Troy Alum :x

Not sure if it was a blow to the head, leading with the head, or hitting a QB when he's sliding, but any way you look at it, I simply hate that kind of play. The defensive player gets screwed in so many ways there, it seems only bad things are gonna happen.

I'm not sure that was a penalty, but I knew the officials would throw a flag as soon as it happened. The defensive player is trained to run up and lay a hit on the ball carrier. And normally the ball carrier is lowering a shoulder and taking/delivering the blow as well. But QBs get to slide under the hit, which causes two things. One, the defender is normally hitting the runner in the hips/stomach area, but the sliding causes the QBs head to be where the defender is usually aiming. And two, with the runner going down, the defenders instinct is to try to lower themselves as well, which results in them dropping their head and thus 'leading with their helmet'.

It's just one of those penalties that you can see coming a mile away but there is nothing you can do about it. The defender is just trying to stop the ball carrier and this is the result.

We played better than I expected, but I didn't think Troy played all that well either. Once their QB started making some plays in the second half, they were clearly the better team. Schilz does have a chance to be pretty good, he looks like a good athlete. My concern is the fact that we had several opportunities to put the game away, or at least force Troy to be one dimensional on offense, and we didn't make the play. This was something I noticed with the team last year. It's like we aren't prepared to handle success. The excuse that we are young is fine if we go down there and get beat up a bit, but when you are in control of the game and can't finish, it isn't valid. Bottom line is close doesn't cut it. There are some positives to build on, hopefully the team improves.

How that was called and the late hit the possesion before went uncalled baffles me. Two referrees stairing down the play, two Troy players hit our player out of bounds, nothing. Oh well. We had our chances in this.
