Genetically Engineered Salmon

Post by Falconian »

www.salmonnation.com › Fish - Cached - Similar

Salmon grow during the warmer months, so the normal cycle takes 36 months for a salmon to grow. This genetically altered salmon will be full grown in 18 months because they grow during the colder months also. I hope this isn't allowed, and if it is allowed, the FDA should require the proper labeling that this fish is genetically altered, but that hasn't been decided yet. Yum.

I was wondering where this came from. I guess this explains it.

Considering that I have generated transgenic animals (those with new genes put inserted) and currently am working on an adenoviral gene therapy project, I'm tilted a bit the other way. Depending on how it was made, I really don't see any big deals. The genes they've used are natural and occur in other closely related fish species. And if they've really been working in this for 10yrs they've had plenty of time to determine if anything else has been altered. To me the concern would be a fool-proof way to keep it from getting out into the wild where it would likely change the natural balance.

I'm reading an excellent book right now that deals with this topic. You might be interested.

"Four Fish" by Paul Greenberg- discusses the changes in the fishing industry as it moves from wild catch to farmed, especially for salmon, cod, sea bass and tuna.

I'm moving back and forth between that and Johnny Winter's biography so I won't synopsize the fish book for fear of talking about albino fish that swam in the ponds at Woodstock or something but the section on salmon is enlightening- I had no idea so many fish were farmed or what that entailed. Greenberg doesn't necessarily see this as a bad thing, either. Its a good read.

I saw a bumper sticker two weeks ago, protesting fish farms. Strange world.

Mostly I am just thinking how cool the neon colored fish at Wal-mart are.

In all 50 States, or just Ohio?

Not sure but scoring a bowshot tuna in Ohio has been darn near impossible- I think I got one once but it all leaked out of the arrowhole in the can before I could eat it.
