Re: Matt Schilz injury
BG doesn't need to name a starter at QB. This could give them a little bit of surprise. I wouldn't mind seeing Pagel worked in as he is a little more of a runner.

Schiltz looks to be a game-time decision for Buffalo:
Matt Schilz, Bowling Green’s redshirt quarterback, is working on returning to the starting role, but his status was still in doubt as of early Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons host Buffalo for Homecoming with kickoff at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday
Schilz suffered a sprained shoulder against Marshall on Sept. 18 and missed last Saturday’s game with Michigan.
“He practiced part of the day (Tuesday). I would not say he felt 100 percent, but he is certainly further along that we thought,” BG head coach Dave Clawson said Wednesday. “I’m not doing this to play cat and mouse with Buffalo or not be direct with you guys (the media), but it might just be one of those deals where it’s a game-time decision. It’s all on how he feels.
“It’s just the nature of his injury. When he feels ready he’ll let us know,” Clawson added.
Clawson said if Schilz tells the coaching staff he’s not ready, they are not going to push him and risk losing him for the rest of the season.
If Schilz cannot play, redshirt sophomore Aaron Pankratz will make his second straight start.
Center Ben Bojicic plans to be ready for starting lineup after missing the last 21⁄2 games with a sprained ankle.
Bojicic said Wednesday he is close to 90 percent and that he is “really excited to get back out there” and the team is only looking to play Buffalo and start the Mid-American Conference season 1-0.
“When they (injured players) come out there, you are always worried there will be a setback,” Clawson said. “Usually as long as there is not a setback the first or second day back, you are usually going to be in pretty good shape.”

Re: Matt Schilz injury
I could not say it any better than the coach did:
But what about redshirting Hurley? “What about the seniors on this team?” Clawson responded. “It’s not fair to the seniors on this team to factor that in. If a guy you’d like to redshirt gives you the best chance to win, you have to play him.”
The article says that Hurley has been getting better lately, but I really wonder if Hurley gave us the best chance all along, and they were just trying to keep that RS until it became obvious that Pankratz couldn't get the job done. A shame, because we should have beaten that Buffalo team.

Re: Matt Schilz injury
Maybe...it sounds like the Michigan game was the first week he got serious reps in practice. Could be that as a true freshman who got here in August, he needed a few weeks of getting the #2 reps in practice to be game ready
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: Matt Schilz injury
This is a reactionary decision. It is also a week too late. There aren't enough games in college football to be playing guys with lesser talent. Redshirts are for teams with depth at particular positions, not for bad teams that are trying to fight for wins.

Bottom line, the Buffalo game likely didn't mean squat. We had to beat Temple and likely Ohio all along to have any shot at the MAC East crown. And both are still in front of us.
Also, while another QB could (I repeat could) have meant a victory against UB, if we eliminate stupid penalties, improve our 3rd down defense and do a better job in our kicking game, we still beat Buffalo.

Re: Matt Schilz injury
Oh yeah, you say that now, now that we're 0-1. 1-0 sounds real nice right about now. Lest you forget, we were out of the MAC race after our first MAC game last year. Not saying that Buffalo will go 8-0 or 7-1, but in this zany and generally pathetic conference they could reasonably go 6-2. That game could have been the difference of putting them behind us for good and having to go perfect the rest of the way.Redwingtom wrote:Bottom line, the Buffalo game likely didn't mean squat.
More like a lock. With them turning it over 6 times and committing all sorts of mistakes, we would've beaten the crap out of UB with Schilz in the game. Period. His injury cost us that game, that and the fact that once again we don't have a kicker that can kick worth a damn.Redwingtom wrote:Also, while another QB could (I repeat could) have meant a victory against UB,

Re: Matt Schilz injury
Tom, that UB game meant a ton...MAC home opener? Going to Ohio and Temple back to back ain't easy. I was thinking a split there and take care of the home slate. 6-2 in East could get you to the title game. At any rate, take 'em one at a time. I'm with Hammb...when I read what Coach Clawson said, it gave me chills. IF Hurley is the best chance at QB for us, he plays...period. He's been pretty highly touted so let's see what he can do. Our openinging day O line is back together as well.

Ummmm, I was referring to another of the backup QB's. Obviously Schilz would have likely meant a W.bgsufalcon24 wrote:More like a lock. With them turning it over 6 times and committing all sorts of mistakes, we would've beaten the crap out of UB with Schilz in the game. Period.

I understand, but I just don't see Temple losing more than one conference game. So beating them was and is our only shot at a MAC East title. Of course we will know much more after their trip to NIU this weekend. GO HUSKIES!!Falconfreak90 wrote:Tom, that UB game meant a ton...MAC home opener? Re: Matt Schilz injury
That is possible. Temple is a solid club and the game with NIU should be a great one. UB was also a division loss...so I still think it means quite a bit.Redwingtom wrote:I understand, but I just don't see Temple losing more than one conference game. Agreed. I'm actually trying to provide some optimism in that if we win the next two weeks the game vs. UB will mean a heckuva lot less.
