Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
Re: Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
You have not even seen the large majority of Clawson's recruits yet! Beckman has brought in a lot of transfers, JC's, and questionable grades (because he can) going for immediate results, while Clawson is building for the long run and playing very few of his freshmen and only bringing in a JC or so on an immediate need basis. I prefer Clawson's method myself.
Re: Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
First things first ... I believe Dave Clawson is currently 1-0 vs. Tim Beckman, right? And as for my complete thoughts on Beckman, they are listed on this link ... http://www.ay-ziggy-zoomba.com/phpBB3/v ... =3&t=26333
The most telling sign to me that we got the right guy of the two happened last year against UT. Eric Page, Toledo's star WR, basically cost UT the game on two plays. He muffed a punt, and he fumbled a ball late while UT was trying to come back. After the game was over, Page was totally inconsolable, and not a single UT player tried to cheer him up, and Beckman totally ignored him. The guy who stopped over to cheer him up: Dave Clawson. He told him he played a great game, and if the NFL would accept players one year out of high school he would encourage Eric to leave now because Clawson didn't want to have to see him playing on the other team for four more years. That is just plain classy.
Fast forward a few weeks to the Humanitarian Bowl. We lost the game late on a few plays, and Adrian Spencer was the guy who blew coverage multiple times. He was totally inconsolable. Who was there to cheer him up? Clawson's biggest playmaker and one of his captains, Mr. Freddie Barnes himself. Check out Freddie's comments: http://bgsufalcons.com/custompages/audi ... -HBowl.WMA
You don't just want a coach who wins games. You want a coach who builds a team that is going to win games this year, next year, the year after, so on and so forth. I see that in Coach Clawson. He won last year when he didn't have a depleted roster, and he is creating an environment that will allow players to stick around, feel comfortable, and enjoy playing for him. I had an e-mail conversation with Coach Clawson in the offseason. I'm not going to share the details, but I can tell you that I have complete faith that Clawson is building a program that is going to win and win sustainably.

Well said Factman and Mark...totally agree. Coach C will do this program proud. Sure we're taking some lumps this year but the team continues to fight on. I'm confident BG will return as a powerhouse sooner than later. And BG will beat tsun again this year.

I agree that may have been a classy move by Clawson, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with building a championship team. Beckman may have spoken to Page in the locker room or on the bus after the game. Everything I've seen from Toledo is that the players enjoy playing for Beckman, and that is all that matters.

Attitude and class out of the coach isn't everything by any means, but it's a huge part of building success. I got to spend some time shooting pool and talking football with Beckman, Stud, and Brandon when they were here. They were all alot of fun to talk to and it was obvious how enthusiastic they were about their jobs. But look what happened over time as things started to come apart, Brandon's attitude in the media and towards the fans changed as his frustration started to get the best of him.
Clawson has been nothing but classy in the media. As far as I've seen, he doesn't throw his players under the bus and has kept his head during interviews even as frustrating as this year has to be for him and the whole program. That's huge when you're trying to resurrect a program with alot of holes. You can let it get to you and let it snowball, or you can suck it up and keep at it. I think that's what's happened in the past. When things started getting tough, the problems just kept piling up and getting more out of control.
It's yet to be seen if Clawson is the type of X's and O's/gameday coach we need to get back on top. I think he is if he can ride out the rough time we're in right now. He's definitely been the type of person that I'm proud to say represents the team and the university so far though. That gesture to Page was just one example of why i feel that way. I think he has what it takes to stay focused on what he needs to do to try and build things here. My whole point is that kind of attitude and class is very important in keeping the faith of the fans, players, and recruits too.

MarkL and fact- you couldn't be more right on. Dave Clawson equals class- in every way. This is exactly the kind of person I want representing BG in any public area- sports, the arts, administration, wherever. Anyone who has spent any significant time with him at Fordham, Richmond or Bowling Green will tell you the same thing.
When you build the way we are builing (and from where we were after the 2010 seniors left), it takes time.
As a person, Dave Clawson is exactly the the kind of fellow who will do things the right way and represent BG well in all phases.

Time could go on and I could be proven wrong, but there is no way I would trade Clawson for Beckman. Not now, not when we were going through the hiring process.

Ah, yes, the old "help from the officials" thing. Only reason we EVER win is because of those darn cheating officials.mmisbg wrote:It means exactly what it says. Toledo may have had a few games where they have looked good, but they have played a LOT of sloppy football. Sloppy enough that I have a hard time classifying as good execution. You have to credit at least some of their wins to playing the right teams on the right days, and having help from officials.daspollak wrote:Not as good as their record, what does that mean?

Re: Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
You are correct- the other post is silly. Nice of Clawson but please-Page is, by all accounts, quite content to be at Toledo and playing for Beckman. He had a chance to leave when Amstutz was fired and stayed, specifically he said, because of the new coach. Clawson seems like a nice guy who is committed to BG and who is struggling a lot this year. Neither coach has all their guys playing and both have had moments of brilliance and moments where they looked like first year head coaches. My guess is that both will have some solid success.Drago wrote:I agree that may have been a classy move by Clawson, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with building a championship team. Re: Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
Clarification: I didn't mean that Page isn't happy playing for Beckman or that Beckman runs a program that his players don't want to play in. I mean that Clawson has gone far beyond what is required in terms of creating that environment. The Eric Page story I shared is to illustrate Clawson's personality and to what extent he goes in terms of encouraging players. If he steps out of the way to encourage an inconsolable player from his team's biggest rival, just imagine how much his own players must love playing for him, even after his players make mistakes.h2oville rocket wrote:You are correct- the other post is silly. Sorry- that line only works if you had just mentioned what Clawson did. But you took the opportunity to slam Beckman and the UT team as well, and unfairly as Drago pointed out.

Well the love fest for Clawson is undeniable however don't fall to deep in love because the second he gets a better offer he is gonna bolt for a bcs job. Clawson is a climber and one or 2 more bowl games and he's gone no if ands or buts about it.
Re: Tim Beckman v Dave Clawson
I think that is an important point in doing things the RIGHT way rather than the way some other coaches do it. When you leave, you leave the program the in great shape, versus in shambles like some other guys would.
