Exhibition Grade: B Minus

Post by gmartin »

BG women beat Findlay, 88-41 in its exhibition game last night. Everyone played before halftime and Lauren only finished with 8 points so it was an off night scoring for her. Findlay expected to win its conference. Our D forced 30 turnovers, shot 46% from the field, 80% from the foui line and yet Coach Miller gave them a B Minus grade saying that effort would be sixth in the MAC. Coach Miller always downplays the team to get the most out of them. If that effort was a B MINUS just think what we are capable of once we play our A game and Lauren takes more than 8 shots. Going to be one fun year!! To bad we couldn't had the Stroh built a year earlier and host the NCAAs this year.

BG did all right last night, but not our best! I wonder if Findlay fans thought that they were actually going to beat BG last night?!

Just like all of us would support our women vs. UConn, I would suppose they support their women against ours. That's being a fan (atic). Support the team and hope to be there for that signature win.

This is Curt Miller we are talking about, this is what he does to motivate his team, downplays performances like that in exhibition games, no matter how great we the fans right it was. It always seems to work, so I'll never question coach about his methods

Exhibition games are just that....exhibition. Once the real season starts, I'm confident we'll be mentally ready. This is gonna be a very special season.

Our first Dustin sighting of the season. Stay tuned for another Extreme season of Dustin. I agree about Coach Miller always downplaying his teams effort. Just his way of coaching and who can argue with the success. Can't wait for the Vandy game. Definitely worth the 5 hour drive (and yes that does mean stopping an hour for dinner).

Giving the team's performance a B-minus is classic Coach Miller. This is what he does, making sure our team never gets too high on themselves. Coach always makes sure our teams knows about that things that they have to work on. From my perspective we looked pretty good. We prolly turned the ball over a bit too many times that I'd liked at times but all in all not bad. I really liked what I saw out of transfer Danielle Havel. She's about 6'1-6'2 and can put the ball on the floor and shoot the 3 and can prolly play about 3-4 positions. She gives us a nice size advantage at the 2 and 3 positions when we go big.

Frosh Jill Stein from Tiffin played a lot in the game, was surprised Zuercher didn't start at center and didn't really play much till late 2nd half. Freshman pg Jillian Halfhill who we stole from MSU and other B10 schools played very well for a frosh. She played with a very uptempo style , is quick and fast and is very nifty around the basket. I like her a lot. Noelle Yoder the other frosh played some as well. She handles the ball very well as well shoots a nice 3 ball. Although she's rather small for the position, I'm guessing Yoder is more of a 2 guard as she never ran the point but will probably will be a option in some situations later on.

As for LoPro, she really wasn't looking for her shot as she mainly was working other players in the offense. She wasn't aggressive because she didn't have be in the least. What'll be interesting is who will be Pontius's backup. Most likely it will be Jess Slagle but Halfhill runs more of the uptempo offense that Miller likes so we'll see what happens there. Hennegan started at center for the game but I'm not sure if she will be our season long center. I personally like Zuercher in that position for several reasons. Kelly has more experience in our system and plays more physical. We have a lot of depth again on this team and can't wait for the start of the real season.

Was anyone else pleasantly surprised with attendance for this exhibition?

Well....seems like Mr. Miller might just have known what he was talking about after all.

All in all...the loss is probably a good thing for several reasons:

1) Team now knows they still have to work their arses off...and from the tip.
2) It is reallllllllllly early as far as having a loss goes.
3) It wasn't a home or a MAC game.
4) If they ever doubted Miller before...I doubt they do now!

When a team makes 8 3s in the 1st half... Kind of hard to win. BG has done this to so many teams in the past. Still excited for the season.
