Van Johnson to Transfer?

Post by GoGriz »

From the Egriz.com message board.....
egriz.com wrote:From a VERY good source: we have offered a QB from Bowling Green a schollie and he has most likely accepted

I don't know if this kid has been signed to be the starter or whether they plan on bringing in another QB, but this info is very reliable..
Most think it is Van Johnson, but as of right we don't know?

Anyone here who it might be?

Man, I was checking out Bowling Greens stat for 2004 and you guy really chuck the football!!!

Interesting. I haven't heard anything. He's certainly logjammed at that position.

Van Johnson would make some sense.

If so, I wish him the best. Between Omar Jacobs and Anthony Turner... I'm not sure he's ever going to get meaningful playing time again.

To our friend from Montana: Thanks for the kind words. The Grizzlies have a great program. Are you still able to play Idaho every year, or did the new I-A scheduling rules finally scotch that?

We have not played a I-A program since the new rules have taken effect. There are a lot of issues behind this (too many to detail), but in short, no Idaho won't play us anymore.

Can any of you give me details about Van Johnson? Montana really chucks the rock too, so this is a major concern for the Griz nation.

From the limited snaps he got in game action and his performance in the Spring Game/other scrimmages, I think Van Johnson will be a fine quarterback at Montana. He is a very good athlete that can hurt defenses with his legs if receivers aren't open. He has good arm strength and accuracy, but with Jacobs and Turner at QB, there is just no spot for him. I wish him the best.

Now if the Bowling Green QB happens to be Omar Jacobs, then you're getting a Heisman hopeful for next season. :D

I should point out that we have quite a few high school quarterbacks on our roster:

-- Jason Washington, RS sophomore (in '04), Oakland, Calif.
-- Will Myles, RS sophomore, Chicago
-- Benji Kennedy, RS freshman, Morris, Ill.

There may be more but those are the ones that come to mind.

We are now listing Myles as a DB and Kennedy as a WR... so I assume they are going along with the transition into another position and aren't looking to play somewhere else.

Washington is still a quarterback as far as I know.

How can a 1-AA school offer a scholarship, much less one to a player under scholarship at another university?

An athlete can move down a division, but not up, without losing a year. I would imagine he as ask for and received permission to transfer, which is standard protocol. Montana then probably ask to talk to him.

I understand how a transfer takes place, but I question whether or how Montana was able to offer a scholarship given its status? I'm not suggesting tampering took place.

Might we have another Magner-esque receiver with Benji having HS QB experience? Maybe we can use him in some of the trick plays we ran with Magner.

If we could get Anthony Turner on the field, too, we could reinvent college football. Three passing threats on one field? I can't even imagine the plays that could be drawn up.

No, I'm not endorsing that kind of gimmickry. But, imagine the plays!

Don't forget that Peter Winovich and Corey Partridge were both QBs in HS.

Div. I-AA has uniforms and everything. . . . (sorry for the rib, nothing personal just reminded me of the line from Major League)

Oh Division II also offers athletic scholarships. . . .
