BG gets 5 votes in the Women's AP Poll this week, good for 33rd in the nation. USA Today/ESPN Poll out tomorrow.
Vanderbilt win lost a little luster as the they lose at Denver on Saturday, 70-65. Probably hurts our RPI and SOS ratings as well.

Re: Polls
Yeah unfortunately that win over Vandy doesn't look as impressive as Vandy lost to a sub .500 Denver game. Our win is no longer considered a quality win at this time so we need Vandy to kick some butt in the SEC to get its rpi righer. We also need ALR to win as many games as possible and for Evansville to continue winning.
Currently our RPI is 37. I am thinking that is where I expect it to end up at the end of the season. Creighton is playing very well now so their wins will help us as well.
In some stats:
BG is in the Top 15 in scoring margin
#2 in team FT %
Lauren is #2 in FT %, but soon to be #1 as the leader may not have enough attempts.
BG should be ranked #3 in mid major poll behind Green Bay and Florida Gulf Coast.
Keep winning and the ranking will come.
Also, Lauren needs 6 consecutive FTs to break the Div 1 record. Believe she is about 23 shy of all time mens and womens record (college and professional)

Re: Polls
Lauren may break the Div 1 record this week and all time college record in weeks to come (women - 85 Div-3). (Men-94) although been said in the 1930s John Wooden made 134 straight before records were actually certified. But I don't think Lauren will set any world records. Guiness Book of World Records some guy made over 5200 straight free throws. Lauren is only 5150 shy.

Re: Polls
It goes to show you just how damaging that opening loss to Evansville was. We went from 33 votes to start the year to 0 almost overnight, and it took us a bunch of resounding wins to get back to 5. It'll probably take us half the season to get back to 33, and 3/4 of the season unblemished to crack the rankings, whereas if we were unbeaten right now we'd probably be in, or at least just barely out with 60-80 votes.
As long as we don't stub our toe anywhere else, we'll get in eventually.

Re: Polls
Why do we NEED Vanderbilt and Arkansas Little Rock to win? Even if they go undefeated the rest of their games, it will not make a difference to us. Bowling Green NEEDS to win the MAC tournament to get to the NCAA tournament.
Is it nice to have the votes and the good RPIs? Yes. Does it guarantee anything? No. At least not for us.
If we hadn't lost to Evansville we would have some more votes without a doubt... But it's going to take winning a lot more games in a row, especially against the teams we will be playing to get in the top 25. And if we don't win the MAC tourney... then I doubt we go dancing.
Coach Miller knows that rankings don't mean much for this team. They are nice and rewarding... but really the only thing it is really useful for is recruiting. I'm not saying it isn't important to beat good teams and get respect... I just feel it is more important to win the conference tournament. Their goals for the season are to win the regular season, and the MAC tournament. And if they are ranked as the season rolls along, that's great... but I don't think it's a goal in the locker room.
I think it's cool you guys keep up with the RPI and rankings and all that. And inform us where we stand... because it is nice know.

Re: Polls
Ranked #31 in coaches poll.
Personally I think losing the opening game woke the team up. They did not play well in the exhibition and from what I been told wasn't practicing well weeks before the season. I would prefer an early road loss to get the team motivated than a loss 7 or 8 games into the season. Coach Miller and Roos even said that the opening loss was a blessing. But the way Evansville shot the first half they would have beaten nearly anyone that night.
We win our next 4 weeks we will be ranked going into MAC play.

Re: Polls
Polls are nice but playing the best basketball & getting better each game is what this team is about IMO Past is over, future is just that, present is where the whole group of people we identify as BGSU Women's Basketball is focused. Now on to Bowling Green, Kentucky executing Miller ball----not 2 high, not 2 low----hopefully 1 point more than the opponents.

Re: Polls
Unfortunately, the MAC is still a one-bid league. Polls and records are great, but we just need to win 3 (or 4) games in mid-March.

A 27-1 or 26-2 regular season followed by a MAC tournament defeat would severely test this theory.threestooges wrote:Unfortunately, the MAC is still a one-bid league. Polls and records are great, but we just need to win 3 (or 4) games in mid-March.

Re: Polls
With Green Bay's loss to Marquette, will we see a shift in the mid-major polls? Fla Gulf Coast (7-0), ranked 3, has remained perfect although has played 4 fewer games than BGSU. Our win against AP doesn't look any more impressive than their win against Troy.
A quick question about the mid-major polls. As there are only 31 people on the voting panel, can the points change by more than 31? Do the first place votes count for extra points?

Re: Polls
I'm sorry but the College Insider Mid Major poll is worthless! Hello, Xavier is from the A-10, they should be #1 on that list. Every other publication count Xavier as a mid major as it should but not College Insider.
Also, Green Bay lost to a QUALITY road game to a I think 9-1 or 9-2 Marquette team. They only slipped a few spots in the polls and I think they will be ranked higher in that so called Mid Major Poll.
We are ranked #31/32 this week and we won't crack the Top 25 this week because no games and next week our opponents are BAD so we probably won't crack Top 25 to mid January.
Our RPI is now down to 53. In fact Miami, Oh is up to 57 and their record is 6-3.
We simply need Vanderbilt, ALR, WKU, Detroit and Creighton to win as many games as possible to raise their RPI to help raise our RPI back up. If not, our RPI and SOS will stay about where it is or even drop. I could see BG tripping up possibly 4 times in MAC play (Miami, CMU, UT, Kent) and I don't think a 23-5 going into the MAC tourny will get us in the dance.
I don't see us losing to anyone else except those 4 teams and UT is at AA so that should be a win but still 24-4 still worries me.

Re: Polls
I don't see us losing more than twice in conference play. Toledo, Miami, maybe Kent could beat us. Anybody else, I would be absolutely shocked to see us lose. The conference just isn't as impressive as I'd hoped, with Ball State, Akron, and Ohio being major dissapointments so far.
The last time BG lost in conference play more than twice was in 2008, when Prochaska, Pontius, Uhl, et al, were freshmen. This year's team is certainly more polished, more experienced, and better than that year's team, and comparatively speaking probably isn't far behind the Mann/Horne/Achter/Honneger team of 2007. Losing 4 times in conference this season, given the competition, would be a huge dissapointment, IMO, and yes, would leave us out of the at-large picture. 14-2 or better and I think we're in unless one of the defeats is against somebody like Buffalo or Western Michigan.

When we WIN the MAC Tourney, we're NCAA bound.
It's that simple. Really.
