Big Ten Legends and Leaders division ... really?

Post by MarkL »

So the Big Ten announced their new division names ... Legends and Leaders.

Legends:
Iowa
Michigan
Michigan State
Minnesota
Nebraska
Northwestern

Leaders:
Illinois
Indiana
Ohio State
Penn State
Purdue
Wisconsin

Any doubts over whether or not the Big Ten is in fact full of themselves have been put to rest ....

I vote for :

"Schools Whose Names Start With N or M and Iowa" Division

and:

"The Rest of the I Schools and All the Ones That Start With Letters After N" Division.

A little more descriptive- I would have thought OSU had some legends and that UM had been the Leader at times-my way is straight forward and less confusing although a bit wordy for media ease.

Michigan's fight song contains ... "Hail, Hail to Michigan the Leaders and Best". So ... you'd think they would be a "Leader". But instead, they are a "Legend." And I think I know why ...

Now THAT was a "Legend".

There is really no geographic ideas behind this split. In fact, I don't see any big reason at all for how they divided these up. Couldn't they have done an East/West or North/South?

I think East West would have worked out the easiest, and here is how I would have split it up. Notice, the big rivalry (OSU/Michigan) is a division game. My only thought about the way they split it was to perhaps have OSU/Michigan as the conference championship game, but they want them to play in the regular season every year. So, they would knock one out of the championship game, most likely, and the idea goes down the crapper.

East
Penn State
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Purdue

West
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Illinois
Northwestern

That looks like something a third grader drew up in art class. My gosh is that horrible!

I guess they didn't like the more realistic:

The SEC Spanks Us Division

and

The SEC's Bitches Division

The logo fits the conference perfectly. Consider it next to the Penn St. or Nebraska helmets. Look at the conference logos on their website. Outside Purdue are any of them unique?

Why not just drop the pretense and sell out whole hog.

Something like The Ram Tough Dodge Truck Division and the Subway Five Dollar Foot Long Subway Division?

I wanted to get worked up over the whole Big Can't Count announcements, but I'm becoming more and more apathetic about the BC$ schools.

+1 Perfect idea for them since they really need more money to pay for NCAA approved tats and piercings (no autograph session needed).

Would the "Liars" and "Cheats" division be too obvious?

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."
