Mawel Soler?

Post by Germainfitch1 »

Mawel Soler seems to be a pretty big surprise. I have a few questions. He seems like one of those hardworking glue type players like my namesake who does all the little things. I was thinking that he was the type of player like Fitch who would have trouble playing the one or the two but looking at the break down of the minutes tonight it looks as if Soler would have had to play the two atleast at times. I have not yet seen a game can anyone give me insight? Thanks and Go BG!

Soler has been a great addition to our team. He contributes good minutes every time. He came in for Wright a few times, but he's more a 3/4 than a 2. He may have been at 2 for a while when Wright was in foul trouble and Floyd was kind of shaky, but he's an up front player, more so. He even had a 3--and Coach says he has been working hard on his jumper in the gym. He is part of the story of why this team is better than last year.

 I'm with ya. Though do you think there's a generation out there that cringes everytime they hear "point guard" or "shooting guard", and now curls into a fetal position when they hear how someone "can't play the two"? :?

Remember during the Ron Lewis situation when someone suggested that a JC transfer was going to quit because he didn't want to cut his hair? We would have really missed out if that were true. Soler and Fitch are two guys that can win a game for us and their stat line could read: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal, 28 minutes.

totally agree with that...would have missed out big and if you ask him today if he wishes his hair was long again...he quickly replies, NO!

Dakich talked a bit about Soler on 1470 this afternoon. He mentioned the long hair thing and said that he told Soler this summer that he would have to cut his hair when prectice started. Soler had it cut before the next time Dakich saw him.

Another item about Soler. Dakich said he was also visiting Miami. Miami ended up signing the Pollitz twins and Soler came to BG. Not sure which one happened first but it looks like us and Miami had two scholarships available and were looking at the same three kids.

We only had 1 scholorship remaining at the time, that is why BG did not sign the Politz twins. Take nothing away from Soler, but I would rather have the twins just for the simple fact the OG fans would come to the BG games and we would have a sellout almost every game, even if they did not get a minute of playing time

Are saying that because Lewis was still here at the time? It wasn't a lack of a scholarship that kept the Pollitz twins from coming to BG.

There was a letter to the editor I remember written at the time from an angry OG fan asking BG why the Pollitz twins were not offered scholorships and a reply was printed in the sentinel tribune that BG only had 1 scholorship to offer at the time. The twins then signed with Miami, about 2 weeks later we then had a second scholorship become available. It was discussed in this forum for weeks back then. I think Soler is a great player, but the only reason like I said to have the twins here was to pack the house.

I reiterate that it was not lack of scholarships that kept the Pollitz boys from BG. Infer what you may.

My recollection is that we had "freed up" Isaac Rosefelt's scholarship by then.

I think Mawer is great! I LOVED his blocked shot on Sunday! I love watching out Hoops team play...too fun!

I also just wanted to add how much I like John Floyd. I just like the way he plays. I'm so glad to see some of our new guys stepping up and doing so well. Really bodes for the future!

GO BG! Beat EMU!
