Addition by Subtraction

Addition by subtraction. The Falcons have figured out that maybe unconventional math will get them to where they need to be.

The doomsday crowd was buzzing over the summer when All-MAC guard Ron Lewis zipped up his duffel bag and left the Bowling Green campus, headed for who knows where. The Falcons had just lost their best player, and one of the two or three best guards in the conference, so a bunch of people were reaching for the panic button.

Lewis, a talented slasher who might have been the top player in the league in the final two minutes of the game, decided he would go elsewhere, not knowing then just where that meant. At first he said Norfolk State, and the head scratching really got going. Then Lewis opted for Ohio State in his hometown of Columbus.

It was widely believed that a relative had his ear and was telling Lewis he needed to play point guard to get to the NBA. That same relative convinced the slender 6-4 guard that playing the shooting guard position for head coach Dan Dakich at Bowling Green was hampering his NBA future.

In yet another case, the posse won the war.

Lewis bolted, and now sits on the bench in street clothes during the Buckeyes' games. He will watch for a year, and then have two years to make his case at point guard for Ohio State, if Thad Matta decides that is the best place for him, and if that same relative does not convince Lewis he needs to be in the NBA right away.

Meanwhile, the Falcons are off to an 8-2 start, surprising many and shocking a few. The moody Lewis is gone, and the chemistry is a lot better. By removing its best player, Bowling Green became a better team. It's the new math for the Falcons.

CBS might want Dan Rather to check Sportsline's math regarding our record. . .[/b]

That review was written I believe before the Northern game, so the 8-2 record was correct at the time.
