The cheese is usually rubberier than the meat...

lol, my favorite was when they gave us TWO box lunches at 6AM on the day we left, to suffice for "breakfast" and lunch. The one we were supposed to eat around noon had not been improved by six hours in an un-refrigerated overhead compartment... :P

Ok, back to the topic at hand now :wink: (since I haven't been able to get on line for a good two weeks+)

A couple of things jumped out at me in this thread. For one thing, no matter how good or bad a season went while I was in, by the end of the year, I was questioning whether or not I would be back. Near the end, I knew I was done, but shortly after the season, I would come to my senses and knew that there was no way I could stay away. To those who are frustrated with anything from this past year, I would suggest thinking about what you could do to try and help improve it for next year, and then just let it go.

If playing auditions are now a part of leadership auditions, that is a big problem in my mind. The student leadership should consist of people who love what they do, are great teachers and motivators, and can be counted on. Playing should have little to do with that. The section leader should be a strong player and musician since their responsibility is to help clean the music during sectionals. Even in that case, i don't think the section leader necessarily has to be THE strongest player in the section. They do need to have the best possible leadership qualities and the ability to deal with problems within the section on a personal level. Believe me, i've been there. Also, it really shouldn't matter if those in leadership are music majors or not. Obviously, that experience would be helpful, especially to field commanders and section leaders, but shouldn't be a must. Not that it is, but it seems like people think it matters more than it does.

Those of you who are saying you're not happy are most likely the ones who really care and should think things through and bring them up to the staff. They will listen if they really want to continue to improve.

It is true that playing is a part of the leadership auditions (a little discouraging to me, since I'm planning on trying out for next year... and I'm a biology major who's never taken a flute lesson in my life :P) but as they tell us, the audition is really taking place all season long. Taking responsibility during the season, becoming a leader even if you don't have the title of leadership, is important too.

Though, granted, I don't know HOW important. :wink: :roll:

Trust me FliccGirl, it is VERY important. Thats the biggest reason I wasn't leadership this past season. However I don't think you would have any problems. Good Luck with tryouts!!

While on the subject of leadership, I thought I'd share some of my thoughts on the matter. FliccGirl, I've known you for a year and a half respectively and I think you'd make a great candidate for leadership. You're dedicated, prideful, and committed to the FMB and the bettering you your section. (I remember your "encouraging" words during my first season :) ) I know that during the auditions there is a playing portion, but I wouldn't stress over it too much. I don't believe that whether or not you can play a three octave chromatic scale in sixteenth notes at 144 will affect your ability to be a leader. Just play something you like, can have fun with (that's what we're about right?) and something that displays your abilities as a flute player. :D Good Luck and I'm sure we'll chat about this more at a later time. :P

Even though everyone seems to be complaining about the problems with the leadership this year, it's really cool to hear that you all just want to make it better. I get the impression from some other people that I know are trying out that they are only doing it because they are power-hungry and crave the attention. I know that happened in my high school band, and a lot of the members became discouraged from their dictator-like section leaders, and they quit. A good leader tries out because they believe that they have something to offer, and not to simply hover above everyone else. In fact, one of the reasons I decided to become a music major was because during my junior year of high school when I was section leader there was this little sophomore in my section who was having problems with some of the charts in our show. So I told her that I would work with her after practice. So I did, and it went well. She never had any more problems after that, and now she's section leader! But the best part about it was at the end of the season when she came up to me and told me what a huge help I was and that it was because of me that she improved. It's because of that kind of feeling you get when someone says something like this that people should want to tryout. Not because of their reputation or how they want to appear to others. Wow, I really started rambling there, didn't I? :roll: Ok I'm done!

Anyway as much as it pains me to say it, the FMB doesn't need more Maggots. In this case, more players doesn't equal more sound. It will just add to the tuning, and technical problems that the section had. Sigh, Jeff
