Daspollak, what red tape are you talking about for a summer job for an anthlete? I played back in the mid 90's, and I always had a summer job. Sub-leased an apartment in town with a couple other team-mates. Work 6-8 hours a day, head to the weight room, call it a day. Had plenty of extra money for the rest of the season. Now I did know players that didn't do jack during the summer, blowing their food and allowance money on partying and what not. Yes, these athletes are helping the universities make millions while they're only getting a 20k education. That's life! If they're that good, go play pro! I work for a Billion dollar company, and believe me, I get paid a very, very, very small fraction of that. I don't feel sorry for the scholarshipped athlete. They have it made. If they are half way through the school year complaining that they have no money for food or laundry...then they wasted it.

$110,000? This is my seventh year of school. Between tuition (paid for by scholarships / graduate assistantships), housing (partially paid for by graduate assistantship stipend), food, beer, entertainment, bar runs, football travel costs, beer, and research money, I suppose I've hit that by now. Still sounds like a ton.
But in four years? That averages out to $27,500 per year. BGSU's current yearly tuition is $9704. Year, not semester. I imagine that the cost per student athlete at BGSU is WAY less than $110,000. I just can't imagine that other costs would be nearly $18,000 per year. The only way I could possibly imagine costs reaching that high is if you include travel money spent per player and you're talking about an athlete on a team which does a lot of flying to games each year plus hotel costs.
And Birdman .... I'm still in school. Ever heard of grad school, genius? I have a full time job offer waiting for me, my life is in good shape, etc. Yeah, I guess I really need a life. This coming from the guy who sits anonymously behind some avatar throwing insults at people on an online forum and continuously slams BGSU football, BGSU athletes, and BGSU coaches with nothing to back it up. Yeah, I'm really insulted, buddy.

MarkL, I'm not sure what the housing expense is, but between that, books and food, I bet it gets up there in price. Anyways...congrats on Grad School!

Out of state tuition is about $17,000 a year, so the $110,000 all-in amount may not be that far off.MarkL wrote:$110,000? This is my seventh year of school. Also keep in mind that choice of major definitely factors into how much it will cost per year (books, lab fees, etc.). Either way, $27,500 per year is still a nice scholarship deal.takeoffeh wrote:I'm not sure what the housing expense is, but between that, books and food, I bet it gets up there in price.

That's a great deal! Now that we have that all figured out, lets put a cap on coaching salary. Is someone worth 3.5 mil? I don't think so. I think $500k is plenty to live comfortably on.....musicman2343 wrote:Also keep in mind that choice of major definitely factors into how much it will cost per year (books, lab fees, etc.). I am against any pay to play plan generally speaking. But I would not be against a very modest stipend to help with misc expenses during the academic year (akin to a grad asst or resident advisor).

Re: Paying College Players
Of course this doesn't apply to non-revenue sports, but it's been reported recently that some bowl games force the participating schools to buy a truckload of tickets and luxury hotel rooms at inflated rates. These same bowl games then take ADs on cruises and retreats and visits to Adult Performing Arts Centers
. A lot of creepy, back-slapping old men in loud jackets are making big money in a corrupt system that seems more interested in perpetuating itself than anything else. It seems reasonable to suggest that the guys putting keesters in the seats should get a little sompun sompun. The devil is, of course, in the details.
As it is with the players not getting paid, the initial crime by the Buckeyes (selling doo-dads) doesn't seem that terrible. The serial lying after getting caught is not forgivable however.
