Coach Orr Interviews at Monmouth University

I'm sorry, but I can see absolutely NO justification for spending more money on coaching salaries right now. We can barely afford to pay the classified staff and the faculty, we're cutting budgets left and right, and it's only going to get worse with Kasich's planned budget cuts. I'd rather see us suck at men's basketball than have to lay off faculty and jeopardize the University's primary mission: EDUCATION.

Mr. Frack's money will come into play in a few years. Until then, we have no business giving more money to the basketball program. I love BG, and I'm a die-hard Falcon fan, but we are in no position to increase our coaches' salaries.

I agree with you 100%. I'm a big BG Football fan, and I enjoy the women's basketball team. I would probably enjoy the men's team if they were decent. However, word was just passed down through the campus community that the university is looking to select various graduate programs to cut, suspend, or reduce. There are many more ramifications due to the budget deficit, but this is just one that I know of. Although I absolutely love sports, I would hate to see the University cut academics in favor of athletics. Many programs are running at or below adequate staffing levels.

I think Coach Orr interviewing with Monmouth is just another example of why our athletic programs are going downhill at BG. You are a head coach who still has 3 years on his contract, is moving into a brand new facility and has a team with lots of young talent (not sure if I buy into this one). Why would you interview at Monmouth unless you feel like you aren't going to suceed at BG? I don't care if the job pays a 50 grand more. If I have confidence I can win big the next couple years, I stay and take a job that is a step up later on. Obviously he doesn't feel like he is going to win....

This is very disappointing for me to hear about Coach Orr for several reasons, some which have already been mentioned above. But I'm keeping my mouth shut. Here's an article I came across about him interviewing:

Coaching update

As we reported on Tuesday, a source indicated MU officials met with Louis Orr, the current Bowling Green coach and former Seton Hall boss. We have confirmed that he was interviewed.

In addition, we said on Tuesday that Vandy assistant King Rice was a player in the process, and he has been interviewed as well.

Among the Temple assistants mentioned for this job, it now appears Dave Duke will be interviewed, and Matt Langel will focus attention on the Colgate job, according to a source.

Another source has indicated that while St. Peter’s coach John Dunne may still interview at Monmouth, his primary focus has shifted to the opening at Fairfield, with Ed Cooley getting the Providence job.

So far, those interviewed include Kevin Kurphy from the current MU staff, CBA coach Geoff Billet, St. Pat’s coach Kevin Boyle, Notre Dame assistant Martin Inglesby, Orr and Rice.

There’s some other MU-related stuff brewing, so stay tuned.

Not sure what it says about Coach Orr's interview that a longtime assistant coach with NO DI head coaching experience got the job. I think that should be the bigger issue here.

A guy with NO experience getting the gig over an experienced guy like Orr could be seen as an insult to Orr...or..it could be that Orr didn't want to purse it further...or the AD wanted a younger guy..or in the end they wanted a guy with no HC experience (which is odd..but it does happen)...lots of factors play into hiring decisions...
