Spring Scrimmage - A top priority no one talks about ?

Post by Sub-Zero »

Of all the early reads coming out of spring camp, it seems the coaches are not talking about the number one focus area for the team - TACKLING. We were without question the worst D1 team in the country with our defensive tackling. While all of our games exhibited horrible tackling, the Michigan game in particular was beyond the pale, a new low. We absolutely have to do better with toughness and technique. I know we were young but tons of teams around the country face the same issue year in and year out. This issue falls directly on the coaching staff. I like the focus on running the football and getting what I believe to be the best set of TEs in the conference more involved with the game plan but we will not make any progress this year unless the D takes it up several levels on getting to the ball and getting the opposition to the terf.

Sub-Zero: With only 12 post. I want for the record that you are in no way shape or form related to Birdman and he did not have any im-put on your comments? Your taking all the fun out of my posts. If this keeps up he may be forced into retirement (Birdman that is) [-X

Sub-Zero - it's difficult telling much this early on any aspect of the team. We'll know a whole lot more than we do when the spring game is over, but even that doesn't tell us a ton. I'd say the biggest two issues to work out are definitely running game and tackling. Going out on a limb here, I'd say if the coaching staff is heavily focused on running game, they're probably also heavily focused on tackling. Again, we'll know more after spring game.

And it had better be streaming online again! That was nice.

Tackling has been a problem for this team for many years (not just this last year). Why did Amstutz consistently go for it on 4th down against us? Because he knew we couldn't tackle them. I hate it when our opponent gets a third or fourth down against us, because I know they are about to get a good running or pass play against us. This goes well back to early Brandon years. We need to learn how to tackle.

Here a story from Sunday's Blade about Saturday's scrimmage.

FWIW, my son watched practice the previous Saturday and said it was UGLY.

Transfer: Spot on. Tackling has been a big problem for a long, long time. For the life of me, I can't understand why you wouldn't spend more time on basic tackling drills when it's clearly such a weak spot.

When Noah & I watch the Falcons, we'll often count the number of times a Falcon defender makes contact but fails to bring down the ball carrier.

My son came home after the scrimmage and said that the tackling was somewhat horrific at times. I can't wait to see what it looks like at the spring game. This will be our first spring game visit, so I'm going to withhold my judgement until afterwards.

It's been cool to keep up with every practice on the official site. Yeah, the tackling needs work, always seems to be that way. Hopefully, this year it will be better.

Tackling and kicking are two areas that have really deteriorated at the collegiate level in general.
