Senior Recognition Hockey Banquet

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

http://bgsufalcons.com/news/2011/3/24/H ... 15951.aspx

Just a reminder that there is no formal meal served. It is hor d'oeuvres and beverages only! And for the first time, we will be having it at the ice arena! Very different twist on the event!! And our last chance to honor this very special senior class!!!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Nice turn out today for the Senior Recogition Reception, despite the unusual time it was held. The winners are:

Jack Gregory Scholar Athlete Award - Nick Eno
Rookie of the Year Award - Tie: Brett Mohler & Camden Wojtala
Howard Brown Coaches Award - David Solway
Dr. Ron Zwierlein Leadership Award - David Solway
Bill & Helen Lloyd Most Improved Player Award - Wade Finegan
Jim Ruehl Best Defensive Award - Andrew Hammond
Dr, Tom Wojchiechowski Recognition Award - Josh Kugel (student video coordinator)
Jim Sears Most Valuable Player Award - Andrew Hammond

Seniors did a nice job talking and thanking everyone. Solway especially did a nice job. His leadership qualities just stand out! Coach Bergeron got a little choked up more than once while talking about this team, what they all went through this year, and the four seniors. It was a VERY impressive speech! Next year can't come soon enough!!!

I agree with FF. I was dubious about the time and venue, but it turned out to be a very enjoyable program. Coach and seniors did get choked-up a bit, but there were laughs too. All-in-all, a very nice afternoon. A tip of the hat, best of luck and a great big Thank-You to the departing seniors who, as coach said, didn't sign up for what they got.

We'll know that the glory has returned when the recognition moves back to the ballroom.

Has the best defensive player award ever gone to a goalie before? Not that he didn't deserve it but it's the kind of award that would seem to usually go to a defenseman.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

I've known a few goalies that have been advised not to share any of their fries with their defensemen while on the bus ride back home. And a guy facing 40+ shots each night while his teammates only take 12-15-less than 20......

Fox Toledo was at the banquet and interviewed Coach Bergeron. It's in the weekend recap at the 15:14 mark.

He didn't play a single second this season so he's eligible for a redshirt if the staff wants to give him one. Sort of depends on what he wants too since he's not a scholarship player.

Being brought in to be the 3rd goalie means he'll see very little ice time and move on in 4 years.
