Future construction plans for on campus?

Obviously there are several big ongoing construction projects taking place right now, but does anyone know of what else is planned or will be started next in terms of campus construction or renovations? I am aware of the master plan but I haven’t been able to find a place on the BGSU website that lists exactly what is in order to take place next, or what could happen down the road. I usually can’t find out what is going to be started next until I actually see some sort of construction beginning to take place when I am on campus in person. As an alum, it would be nice to find out a way to learn what is in the planning stages and what is about to take place next. I enjoying being informed about the future planning and progress of the campus.

I believe the next major project is going to be renovating the "Traditions" buildings - University, Moseley, and Hanna Halls.

Also at some point, they will be gutting the interior of South Hall and doing a major renovation of that building. While many would like to see the building torn down, every contractor that has been through the building comments about how structurally sound the building is. So I would not look for the building to be torn down.

Also, look for an announcement about the creation of a new Greek Village within the next 6-12 months. A recent BGNews article hinted about this.

Transfer, thanks for the info. I figured if anyone on here knew some info on this topic, you would be one of them. Do you know if they are planning to keep the "look" of these traditional buildings? I sure hope so! I would hate to see them be blended into something other than how they have stood. I actually don't mind South Hall. I like how it closes in that part of campus if anything. If it works, keep it. Gut it and fix it up. Can you shed any light on this new Greek Village? Such as where it would go? What would it be replacing? Any other info, or even just rumors, would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone tell me what the wall-looking things are at the intersection on Ridge Street is by the Wolfe Center/Healthy Center/Music Building are?

I believe they are creating a decorative gateway type of feel to the area, with new sidewalk sculptures. I know that further down the road, in front of the health center, they are putting a turn-around.

I think the planners at the school really missed an opportunity. I was at Miami yesterday for a relatives graduation and that school is stunning. Brick and uniform everywhere. I have been to Baldwin Wallace recently and its the same. It gives me much more of a college feel. BG, to me, seems a bit too chaotic with all kinds of different feels. It has more of a community college feel to me. Like the new buildings were created without any consideration of what was already in place nor a consideration of public use. If I was coming into BG for the first time I think I would want to steer people down the corridor where they take the famous bicycle picture...I dont see that as the case.

I completely agree. I have been to over 100 different college campuses over the last 20 years or so (not an exaggeration) and after seeing so many different schools across the county in different states, settings, layouts, etc., as much as I hate to say it, BG falls very short in the “appearance” category IMO. Obviously, what qualifies as a nice looking or beautiful campus can be argued and is very subjective. However, relatively speaking, in comparison to many schools across the country, our “look” is lagging. It’s also something I have heard from others (especially visitors) before, during and well after my time as a student that is a knock on our school. I was also a tour guide as an undergrad and trust me when I say it – people notice right away how a campus looks. It seems as if in the last few years, our “powers that be” seem to be trying to help improve this problem if you read through the Master Plan. We don’t have the natural assistance of Mother Nature, some our buildings are very random (several made to actually look like object) and some of them are, well, just downright ugly.

I was tailgating at a football game last year with some friends who wanted to see the campus before the game. We started walking toward campus and they saw Harshman and Kreischer quads and said they looked like a prisons. They also commented on the number of surface parking lots scattered across the interior of campus, lack or trees, basically how it was ugly compared to where they went. I do believe BG must continue to try and improve the look of our campus across the board. When students and parents visit our campus for the first time, a first impression is very important. Now I am by no means saying BG is the least attractive campus I have ever seen or been on. It is not. There are many others I like our campus better over. However, there are far many more that is falls short up against. BG continues to improve itself in many ways and I hope this is also an area our administration continues to make progress in.

i would love to see a timeline....because they seem to have gotten things right to start out with, ie Univesity hall and that area seem to have a similar feel...then they just decided that they wanted to change things up and go in a different direction completely.....I would think that trying to make buildings "match" in some way would be a goal. But we keep doing it. The Stroh, the new arts thing where saddelmire and the union all look like they are completely different entities that might as well be on 3 different campuses atleast from artist renderings.

The sidewalk in between the Wolfe Center and the Fine Arts Center has been removed. Obviously, it will be replaced, but it has been pulled up in the last day or so.

Have they started taking down a portion of the east side of Mac as well? It's hard to tell from the webcam on the new dining hall, but it appears so. Can anyone add any info?

Yes, they have. They have it torn down almost back to where the other side is now. The street is blocked off in that area for the construction. The plan is to have that part of the street permanently closed soon.

For those of you that think the university is a hodge-podge of building designs............wait until you see the new Dining Center by Mac (pretty sure the one replacing Commons is built the same).
