Newly structured grass lots at the Doyt

Post by gmartin »

I am back in BG today and went over to see all the progress over at the university. The Stroh looks amazing. The new residence halls are looking great but I am worried they won't be ready in 12 weeks for fall semester. The Wolf Center and the landscaping along Ridge St looks great. However the one thing that does not look good are the newly grass fields east of the stadium. The grass looks TERRIBLE. Some of it is green. Most is yellow. Some grass SIS not come up and it ijs all weeds and dandylions. Presently it looks bad. I am afraid they are going to have to tear up the grass and reseed the whole lot. Not a big fan of the trees in the middle either. And the new drainage system still has problems. Still standing water in the new grass area. The grass field on the Northside had no water, so drainage is still an issue. Has anyone else taken a look at the new grass lots and what are your impressions. It does blend in with Poe ditch very well.

I don't like the clumps of trees at all. And I commented on the drainage issue before, but after the months long deluge I don't think we can adequately assess the current drainage situation at this time.

Time permitting I'll gather some pictures this week.

The grass is simply being allowed to grow, no attempt at mowing. Having spent most of my kids soccer seasons out there three times a week.......or in a car waiting out the rain, I can say I don't have much concern about it. The ground is muddy, the earth hasn't fully settled yet, and the discoloration seemed more from the various stages of growth rather than because of something failing. Indeed, I found the variation in color to be a nice thing. The drainage isn't actually so bad, when you consider how a lot of farm fields and yards are doing around here.

The tree stands? I suspect they expect some of those trees won't take and the blocks will vary a bit more. It would look worse if it were a line of trees and odd numbers died early. The blocks also make it easier to avoid cars and trucks accidentally hitting the odd tree, now that there aren't any berms to protect such things. The square shape also fits neatly into a block of cars.

I did not know that Lake Erie extended well into Wood and Hancock counties until last Friday.

You didn't? The new designated "wacky guy wandering the streets of BG with a long white beard" claimed to be Noah at McDonalds last week.
