Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
He's never run a clean program...never...ever...not once. I have no reason to think he'd be clean in the MAC. His friends think he's a man of honor? The people that were closest to Bernie Madoff thought he was a hell of a guy too
The quote from the SI article that sticks with me is "he'd read Bible verses with us in the morning and then go out and cheat kids in a raffle". It has a kind of sociopathic ring to it...

Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
I can't help thinking now that we just found out why the mighty OSU would take somewhat of a gamble with a small school coach like Tressel with no D1 head coaching experience, from YSU.
They likely knew what he was and what he would do to get a winner, at all costs, to the mighty O$U.
To me, Tressel is the worst kind of "man of faith". The one who uses it for nothing than more than to hide his blatant sins and disgressions. He is a despciable human being who won't get my forgiveness until he really comes clean and starts taking responsibility for his choices and not his supposed "mistakes". He knew darned well all along what he was doing.

Re: Would you hire Tressell as head coach here
I still stand by my original opinion of "No" because I don't think he would run a clean program - but let's assume for a minute that he did. I still don't think I'd want him here. I see these as the big obstacles/problems:
1) We couldn't ever pay him enough - he was getting 3.5 million in Columbus - we have the lowest or 2nd lowest coaching salary in the MAC. I don't think he'd even consider BG.
2) He, just like every other fantastic coach, would view this job as a stepping stone. We'd have him just as long as it would take for him to land a better job. We might have 2-3 years of success, but then he'd leave and our program would be back where it is about now.
Just my thoughts/opinions.

On top of everything else he's also a hypocrite. In my view, he's using the Bible and his supposed faith in God as a shield to deflect his improprieties. It worked for a while, but it all caught up to him. I understand he wears a bracelet that says "What would Jesus do?". I'm pretty sure lying and cheating aren't on that list....
For that reason alone, I wouldn't want him at BG. I prefer a "what you see is what you get" kind of a coach.

This is my biggest issue with him. For some reason everyone always talks baout what a great man he is when they start talking about him and then get to the fact that he cheated everywhere he has gone. Like being a good christian has nothing to do with cheating.BGFan wrote:On top of everything else he's also a hypocrite. Who'd have thought Frank Solich would have ended up at Ohio U after being a top coach at Nebraska? Those seeking redemption have to start at the bottom.musicman2343 wrote:1) We couldn't ever pay him enough - he was getting 3.5 million in Columbus - we have the lowest or 2nd lowest coaching salary in the MAC. Not sure about that. I think he is 58 years old. He may just look for that chance to prove he is not what he appears to be and then retire. At his age, I'm not sure he would be looking beyond his current job.musicman2343 wrote:2) He, just like every other fantastic coach, would view this job as a stepping stone. I'm not disagreeing with your comments. I understand where you are coming from.

Love the discussion. Hoping that I build enough capital in here eventually to avoid the derailment that almost happened, thanks for bringing us back Warthog and Karl.

I still say hiring somebody like Tressel would put this program under a giant microscope. Somebody said it earlier; we've probably had some minor rules violations that nobody knows and/or cares about. By bringing in somebody like Tressel, you are going to be facing scrutiny on a daily basis with every decision and every move the program would make. It's difficult for a program to become successful when it has everybody looking over its shoulder.

I don't want any part of Jim Tressel. He's not worth the trouble, or his salary. It simply doesn't make sense for a school our size to spend big money on sports. We can never get that investment back, because we simply don't have a big enough revenue base. Let's take the money we would have to spend on a coach like Tressel and invest it somewhere important, like paying professors. Or maybe saving the graduate programs the University is cutting this summer.

Frank Solich is at Ohio University, not the same path as tressel by any means. But coached big-time college football, made a significant salary and is now coaching in the MAC and has built a nice, stable program in athens.
And ulitmately its about wins period.
If Dave Clawson runs a clean program graduates 100% of his players and never has an NCAA violation, but doesn't win I'd give him four to five years max and then guess what he is out........WHY.....NOT ENOUGH WINS.
Heck, some on this message board want him gone. Take the moral high ground and say its grades and developing individuals to be better people. BULL, we all know it but college football is a billion dollar industry and only one evaluation marker and thats wins and championships.

Tressel covered up a violation, if he would have just turned it over to compliance department Pryor would be out, but he would be fine. People would be accepting of that and his image won't have been tarnished.

First game tressell would coach here would sell out. He would get OSU near quality recruits and we would get fans here that were mad at OSU for dumping such a great man. This would be a game changer for BGSU football, probably put us on the Boise St map.jg4242 wrote:I don't want any part of Jim Tressel. He's not worth the trouble, or his salary. nonsense...OSU was breaking rules right and left. I'll agree that you can probably survive if you're just a little dirty and winning, but OSU racked up hundreds of violations under JT...lying to the NCAA may have been the match that lit the fuse, but this was a bomb that was going to go off someday...it was just a mtter of time.
