Urban Meyer coming to Gridiron Classic

Post by BillyLP »

Just saw on the website that Urban is going to be the featured guest this year at the Gridiron Classic next month. I like that he's stayed somewhat involved with BG even with all of the success he's had elsewhere. Wish I could go to the dinner but I don't have $500 laying around at the moment :)

Dinner is only $125.

I blame Gregg Brandon for Urban attending the event (oops! Wrong thread)

If every fan that attended a BG game gave $300, we could afford him to back for a year.

The point is no one SAW him leave. He slipped away in the middle of the night and left the program hanging in the wind.

He left the program in pretty good standing. When Brandon came in, the cupboards weren't bare. He got BG moving in a positive direction, but also when he saw his chance he seized it. I was at BG during that time and I felt a little jaded. He did go on to bigger and better things, and he shouldn't have any regrets. If he wants to take on a charity case and coach BG again I would welcome him back.

He interviewed for a job and accepted a new coaching job that paid him what, 3-4x what he was making? It also put him in a better spot for recruiting and advancing his career. How can we fault somebody for that?

I know people are/were upset by the way he denied interviewing for another job and promised he wouldn't leave, but honestly the way college football works he has no choice. If he is honest and says he's looking at better opportunities it hurts recruiting and everybody in BG still gets upset.

I was pissed at the time, but I got it over with a long time ago. I don't fault somebody for advancing their career. The simple truth is that BG will likely never be more than a stepping stone for coaches, and Urban Meyer is among the best that will ever coach here.

I agree with hammb and FF90....at the time, I didn't really appreciate the way his departure was handled, but that was eight years ago...who cares at this point?
