Best "chili dog" i've ever had is a half smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl. It's the bee's knees.

Okay - I have to call BullPoo. I've seen what you eat at the tailgate and you don't have a vote.hammb wrote: The difference is I like my ribs (and my chili) the RIGHT way.

Perhaps Grant should intervene- if Bleeding Orange and RWT weigh in on opposite sides of the chili discussion this could get ugly!

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Pfft...I think we usually eat pretty well at the tailgates. Nobody was complaining last year when 10 pounds of potatoes disappeared as quickly as I could cook them.

No doubt hammb...I think you need to re-title yourself with something about grilling or deep frying. You. Are. A. god.

If you want chili and have a good recipe I can provide the cooking vessel for large scale amounts on a gameday with a late start. It will cook about 10 gallons.

So in other words, if you are around at a tailgate I need to have waivers along with death and disability insurance paid in full. Maybe I will just set up a security perimeter and have a squad on hand.Flipper wrote:Holy crap...didn't they use cauldrons like that to dump hot oil on people trying to scale castle walls? Generally speaking...If I'm around anything not covered in six inches of padding, an injury waiver is a good idea

Ah the typical "Skyline isn't chili" argument all the food pansies like to make. Only kidding, I know some of you take great pride in your cooking and dining adventures.
For one, Hammb, you called Skyline a "beef/bean soup." First off, Skyline is not a soup at all. If you see someone eating it out of a bowl, they're basically a foreigner in Southern Ohio. The only soup in your pictures there was that ugly looking second dish. And secondly, beans are an optional topping on a 4-way or 5-way, but otherwise, there are no beans in Skyline. Just wanted to clarify that.
And yeah, as many others have said, it's not for everyone, especially if you go in with too many pre-conceived notions about what it should taste like. And it is true that most of the people who like it are those who are from within 100 miles or so of Cincy to begin with. (Although my wife is a born and raised Tennessean and she loves it, so there's always exceptions.) Maybe it's because we tend to have it at an earlier age before we develop a harder association with what chili "should be."
Also, as a lover of both Skyline & Packo's, I'll admit to a structural similarity between a Hungarian Hot Dog and a coney from Skyline, in that there is a bun, a sausage of some sort and a meat-based sauce. However the flavor of the two dishes is very different. Finally, I would be very sad to see Packo's go under. The most I can do from here in Knoxville is buy a jar of pickles & peppers from one of the local grocery stores, but if it'll help, I'll go pick one up today.

To me, it's as much or more that I hate to see an old landmark like that go under, as it is about the food itself.
A very popular family owned place near Richmond Indiana just suffered the same fate over the last few years. Wellivers was the place to go in the area if you wanted something better than the chain family places. It was always packed, even when they raised their prices by alot on holiday weekends. When it was handed down a generation a couple years ago, they tried to keep it going, but just had no business sense. (Or common sense) The community bailed them out of financial trouble once and they blew it again and that was the end of it. I'd hate to see the same kind of thing happen to Packo's.

Packo's won't be the first business torpedoed by a lack of a coherent succession plan...they won't be the last.
