Re: Your 2011 Detroit Tigers!!!
Hope the seat is still warm for you guys. We kept it as long as we could. Our June has been awful and I don't see it getting better anytime soon. That being said, I'm still making the trip to Detroit tomorrow for my first taste of Comerica Park. Any suggestions for lunch???

There's a Johnny Rocket's just across the street. There are some other places, too, but we only ate lunch there once, and we just stopped in there because it's relatively quick.

No offense to you Brian as I see it everywhere, but when did everyone start calling it a no-no? Are we really that pressed for space? LOL
Also, shouldn't it just be called a no since you could give up a run and still pitch a no-hitter?
And shouldn't we call a perfect game a no-no-no then?

Hockeytown sucks...never been to Cheli's but I've heard it's great.

Re: Your 2011 Detroit Tigers!!!
Yeah..he was getting a lot of LH's in an 0-1 hole last night. If he gets ahead of you like that...forget it. He's an amazing talent...a start or two ago he was in the high 90's on pitch 130...looks to be a definite Cy Young contender this year.hammb wrote:When JV is throwing the curveball for called strikes the way he did last night he is VERY tough to hit.Flipper wrote:Yeah..the Tribe aren't an offensive Juggernaut, but over his last four starts Verlander has an ERA under 1.00 and he's got a k/BB ratio of something like 8 to 1. He's having an unbelievable run
What has really impressed me is that he's been throwing a new look lately. That swing back fastball inside against lefties. He was really dominating with that pitch last night. It seemed to sit 92-94 and would cut right back to the inside part of the plate on lefties. They were taking it for called 1st strikes all night long. Combine that with his upper 90s heat, swing & miss change, and unhittable curve and you've got the best pitcher in the bigs for the past couple weeks.
Verlander has always had the best stuff in the AL. More and more he seems to be getting the most out of that stuff. That is VERY nice to see.

Depends what you're looking for VDub.
My favorite pre/post game place is called the Detroiter. It's walking distance from the park at 655 Beaubien St. The Detroiter burger is pretty good, and the combo gives you burger, fries, and a beer. Beer selection sucks, but it's a good burger.
Detroit Beer Co offers decent food and decent beer. It's also walking distance from the park at 1529 Broadway Street.
Right across from the park Hockeytown cafe is a fun place to hang out, but the beer & food are mediocre and overpriced. Never been to Cheli's Chili, but it's right there as well.
If you're into gyros there are a bunch of places in Greektown to choose from. That's walking distance from the park as well. Also in Greektown is Pizzapapalis, I've only ever been to the Toledo location, but the on in Greektown has been there much longer...probably still pretty good.
I've heard good things about Slow's BBQ, but I haven't been there yet. They look like they've got a good selection of craft beers and also your standard BBQ fare. It's not walking distance from the park though. It is only a block or two from the ball diamond that was once Tiger Stadium though. I think it's fenced off, but there are ways through the fence if you'd like to play catch on the same field that was home to the Tigers for 100 or so years. This is still on my to do list sometime when I'm up there...I wanna take BP there...
Have fun up there. Personally I prefer the atmosphere in downtown Cleveland surrounding Progressive, but I much prefer watching a game at Comerica. Hope you're sitting in the lower deck somewhere though...not a fan of the upper deck at Comerica at all.

Almost forgot..The Foxtowwn grille is right accross from the stadium...kinda pricey for dinner, but they make a great pizza and the sauteed calamari appetizer is w/o question the best calamari I've ever eaten.
I think Slow's is knda far from Comerica...unless they finally opened the Cass casrryout location. Speaking of BBQ ribs...I needd to get to Deets in maumee. Heard it was awesome.

Left-handers are hitting something like .170 off of Verlander this year which is amazing. His change-up was pretty much is out pitch last night...a little more than the curve I believe.
And yeah, my buddy's think Hockeytown is overpriced as well.

Yeah, Slow's is over by the old Tiger Stadium, definitely not walking distance to/from Comerica, but from what I've heard it might be good enough to justify making the stop. I need to try it sometime.Flipper wrote:Almost forgot..The Foxtowwn grille is right accross from the stadium...kinda pricey for dinner, but they make a great pizza and the sauteed calamari appetizer is w/o question the best calamari I've ever eaten.

I haven't gotten to Deets yet either...need to do that...
Re: Your 2011 Detroit Tigers!!!
Last night's game moved Verlander's season WHIP to .887 That is INSANE for a starter 111 innings into the season.Redwingtom wrote:Left-handers are hitting something like .170 off of Verlander this year which is amazing. Verlander sucks..he's terrible. The guy couldn't carry Walt Terrel's jock...
(he's pitching today and I fear that this adulation were showering him with will jinx him)

Re: Your 2011 Detroit Tigers!!!
Had a good trip to Detroit. That was the first time I've ever really been in a situation where I was not rooting for the home team and a large majority of the people around me were looking at me like "Who's this arsehole in the Tribe gear?" We were treated fine, even a few Indians fans near us in the stands. We were in the upper deck but our view of the field was great. I don't know if it's the light color of the dirt around home plate but my buddy and I lost the ball off the bat quite a few times. That was a little weird. The facade of the park was pretty cool and I also liked the area where the carousel is. I like the "History Posts" through the concourse with the different decades and the six statues in the centerfield area were pretty cool. The fountain was decent too. Overall, I rank it right behind PNC in my list of Major League parks that I've attended...unfortunately, that also makes it last on my list.
1. Wrigley
2. Jacob's Field
3. Camden Yards
4. PNC Park
5. Comerica Park
Don't worry though. As soon as I get a ticket for a game at U.S. Cellular Field, Comerica will no longer be at the bottom of the list.
